Patriots Free Agency Needs

Free Agency is upon us and the Patriots are already linked to every single big name free agent!

The Patriots will not spend a ton of money on one player nor will they sign a bunch of high profile players, at the most, maybe they get one big name player.

The Patriots biggest needs are offensive line, WR, and linebacker depth. My preference would be to sign an OL, LB, and WR in Free Agency and draft a RB in the draft along with more depth players. The price will have to be right, this is the Patriots after all. If a WR or LB wants too much money in free agency than I’d much rather the team draft them, and pay the OL big bucks in free agency.

I break down the best free agent options for the Patriots below.

The Patriots have drafted a bunch of offensive linemen the past few years, so I would like for them to add one more veteran with Vollmer, Solder, and Stork, and let the rookies develop more. Here is the list of free agent OL.

The Patriots really need a starting guard that knows what he is doing, and my dream guy for the Patriots would be Alex Boone. My guess is he will be far too expensive but can you really put a price on protecting Tom Brady?

Zane Beadles is another big name to watch for and he will be a little less expensive than Boone. If the Patriots want a good player for value, keep an eye on Richie Incognito and Jeff Allen, maybe the two most realistic guys that the Pats chase.

Rolando McClain is the obvious linebacker, the Patriots made a play for him last year. The Pats may say no thanks since he turned them down last year, but if they don’t hold grudges I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t offer him another deal. He’s not very expensive but has good value and will add much needed depth to the spot.

DeMeco Ryans is a possibility if his asking price is reasonable which I imagine will be.

James Laurinaitis would be amazing to get, but highly doubtful since he’s probably going to be expensive.

Wide Receivers for the Patriots in free agency is full of potentials for this team to get at a reasonable price.

Anquan Boldin will start this list because he won’t be too pricey to get and makes the most sense. He runs routes and catches everything, the two requirements to play for the Patriots. The most ideal player for Tom Brady.

Roddy White because why not? He’s a vertical and horizontal deep threat who catches everything. He may be too pricey for the Patriots. Still, he’s worth keeping an eye one.

Mohamed Sanu, like Boldin, makes the most sense. He won’t be expensive either. He can run the vertical and horizontal routes and won’t drop passes. I can see the fit already.

Jerricho Cotchery. Yep, watch for him if he turns out to be a free agent. He catches everything and has always been a thorn to the Patriots so why wouldn’t they make him apart of their own team?

The Patriots could sign another running back, a pure running back, because they have their pass-catchers. I’ll start with the obvious, Matt Forte. Everybody wants the Patriots and Forte to join forces, if the NFL had shipping fandom, they’d be shipping this duo so hard. They’d call them Fortriots, or Patfort. Anyways, back on topic, I would love this. I want it to happen too, but I fear Forte’s asking price may too high for the team. If it is, I want the Patriots to just wait for the draft and grab Aaron Green out of TCU.

Chris Ivory and Alfred Morris jump out to me on the list, but I doubt they will happen. Ivory would be most likely, but even then, it’s all about the money.

The Patriots do need one more tight end because they released Scott Chandler. They haven’t had much luck finding a good pass-catcher behind Gronk, but they won’t stop looking.

Coby Fleener, the former Colts player, who killed the Patriots one time. He’s a 6’6 young stud and a real possibility because he was underused in Indy, meaning someone could strike a nice deal with him. He’s done just enough to be noticed by the Pats and been so modest in production to prevent him from demanding a high price deal. That’s ideal.

Jermaine Gresham is a real possibility. He hasn’t lived up to expectations anywhere but that won’t scare the Patriots who will see his potential.

Vernon Davis is a pure pass-catcher and did nothing with the Broncos. He actually dropped a few too many passes, but his name will carry weight this off-season and not a pricey one.

Garrett Graham is a strong possibility for the Patriots. He’s big enough, shown enough promise, and will be so inexpensive that the Patriots may pull trigger.

I think they will grab a tight end and WR during the free agency since they released LaFell and Chandler, but we will see.

They have Hightower, Collins, Jones, Butler, and Ryan to extend at some point, and those are high price players.

Who would you like the Patriots grab this off-season?

Free Agency begins March 9th at 4:00 pm EST.
