The Patriots are preparing and planning on working out a new deal with CB Darrelle Revis, a big key to their defense this season.

Revis was everything they were hoping for and more, constantly shutting down the other team’s number one guy and his reputation caused more than a few not even bother throwing his way.

Patriots president Jonathan Kraft says the team wants to get a deal done and is hopeful one will get done.

“Hopefully both sides want to make a deal and we’ll be able to get one done,” Kraft said on sports radio WEEI’s “Dennis & Callahan” program with Kirk Minihane.

Revis was signed to a two year deal before the 2014 season, but he will be a huge cap hit with $25 million against the cap.

“People understand that that’s a placeholder and we’ll get to work on trying to make [an extension] happen,” Kraft said in the interview.

Kraft went on to talk good things about the all-pro corner.

“He’s been everything and more since he’s been here,” he said. “Patriots fans knew what he was like on the field, but didn’t know what he was like off it. Having worn green all those years and the blind emotion we all have toward the Jets, you have one perception of the man. And the man is very different than that. He’s a great guy and he works hard. There is no over-ego to him and he’s a great teammate. He’s been a real pleasure to have him as part of the organization.”

The Pats want to keep Revis and it’s very different from last year with Aqib Talib. Robert Kraft went on record with some concerns about paying Aqib Talib big money with his injury past for the Patriots alone. They have no such concerns with Revis and he was lights out, played the best or at least top two with Sherman this season. He’s the kind of guy they would pay big money too, but we will see what happens over the course of trying to get a deal done. We will also see how badly Revis wants to stay in Boston.

One thing the Pats fans can be confident about is the Patriots are willing and wanting to keep Revis at a high cost, not $25 million cost, but a high one no doubt. He’s worth it too.
