Tom Brady talks Gronk, Colts, Lions, and Dumb and Dumber

Tom Brady made his weekly appearance on the WEEI radio Dennis & Callahan show this morning.

He gushed about how good of a player Gronk is.

“He surprises me all the time, just what his ability is,” Brady said. “He’s just got incredible ability to make catches, runs, the way he blocks, just as a teammate — there’s nothing he can’t do. It’s so fun to play with people like that. Gronk has been a guy I’ve loved playing with since I’ve been here, he’s just a phenomenal player, phenomenal athlete. He’s a tough matchup for everybody because he’s big, fast, athletic and he has a great attitude. It’s the whole package with him and the biggest issue that he’s had is staying on the field and that is hard for a lot of people, and I think he’s really worked hard to put himself in a position where he can be on the field, so it’s been great to see.”

Gronkowski has seen his last two seasons shorten due to injuries so a lot of people assume he would play more cautious this year, but that 26 yard touchdown run on Sunday night was anything but cautious when Gronk ran around or through the Colts secondary. Brady said he doesn’t need to avoid hitting, but there are times when he needs to.

“I think there is definitely times to play it safe and there is other times not to, and I don’t think that was one of those times,” Brady said. “The game was still a two-score game and we were trying to really put the nail in the coffin. You don’t want to go — and I’ve talked with other players over the years about — it’s great to try and gain extra yards and all those things, but it’s also to put yourself at the risk — like cutting back into seven guys on defense and taking a big hit to gain an extra yard and get knocked out of the game and knocked out of next weeks game, and maybe knocked out of the week after that. Those things don’t make sense to me.

“Part of being a smart football player is making smart decisions and you have to evaluate the situation and you have to try and make a smart one. We all try and do that on our particular plays, with our particular job and what we’re asked to do, but at the same time doing things that are in your you can’t help the team if you’re not out there playing. In that particular situation Gronk made a great stiff-arm and cut back, really ran through the secondary, which was awesome. That is what he thought he needed to do and that is what he did. That was a great play and a great way to really end the game in a way.”

Brady talked about how important it was to play from ahead against the Colts.

“The other night we really didn’t have any negative plays, we didn’t have any negative runs, real negative passes where we lost yards,” said Brady. “We had two interceptions, but other than that it was pretty clean. It was a great way to play them. It was a great way to play them from ahead. We talked about that all week because you really don’t want to let them be two-dimensional and we really forced them into a one-dimensional game and we could really play the game on our terms all night, being able to run it like we did. It was just awesome to control the line of scrimmage like that. Every time we handed it off we were making yards, which is a great thing for our offense.”

He also talked about the Lions, the next game.

“Hard to tell, it is still pretty early in the week,” said Brady, when asked if the Lions are the best defense the team has faced. “We’re still doing the evaluation of it. They are a good team, they’ve always had a good defense and obviously it starts with their guys up front, so they get a lot of pressure — they got four guys up front and they rotate a lot of guys in and out of their front-four to get pressure. [Ndamukong] Suh has been a great player for a long time. We’ll try and put together a great plan and try and take advantage of things we see. They are athletic, they all run to the ball, they have a lot of speed. It’s a big challenge.

“It’s very different than what we faced last week, so we have to find a different way to win. We have to have a great week and that is where it starts — preparation so you can go out and play with confidence, play with anticipation and you go out and see where you’re at. If that game plan doesn’t work you try and get your game plan B as quickly as you can and if that doesn’t work you get to another one and you try and keep finding combinations all the way to the end to try and score points.”

Brady was asked about his relationship with OC Josh McDaniels and if he gets any say in the game plan.

“I’m not sure how it works for other teams. I’ve always had the opportunity to say my piece. Josh [McDaniels] and I are always talking and always meeting. Fortunately, we’ve been together for so long, I would say 98 percent of the time see things the exact same way. We’ve got a great relationship so we have great communication. We’re always trying to do what we both think is best for our team. Going out there and playing with confidence is really important for all of us. Josh having confidence to call plays and me having confidence to run plays is I think what makes a great quarterback-coordinator relationship. I think we’ve had that for a long time.”

Brady also talked about why offensive linemen prefer to run block than pass block.

“I think they love run blocking. That is just the sense over they years of playing with as many O-linemen that we’ve had. They’re just phenomenal, all the way around when they are able to do that and to create holes like they did the other night. Run blocking just allows them to be aggressive. Pass blocking, is obviously if you think about it, just you’re in a defensive mode and you’re trying to protect a spot on the field. Really, when you’re run blocking you can be the aggressor. It could be double-teams, down blocks, pulling around to hit smaller players, so they can really impose their will on the defense opposed to defending a spot all day.”

Brady also talked about being in Dumb and Dumber To.

“Yeah, I’ve known Bobby Farrelly (director) for a long time, so when Bobby asked me to do it, he kind of told me the part so I thought it was I’m a big fan of all their movies, obviously, so I haven’t seen the movie yet. I asked Bobby to send it to me, and he’s like I don’t have it yet, which was like a week ago and I said it’s out in theaters, so I have to get out to a theater and try and see it.”

He also talked about practicing in the cold.

“It’s cold pretty much here on out. There’s no more dome games, or any of that BS. It’s all football weather from here on out.”
