New England Patriots Super Bowl Champs

Patriots putting too much on Tom Brady

Tom Brady is Captain America, but not Superman, he can’t do this alone.

Tom Brady is a game planner, a hard worker, a leader, and very talented, but New England wants him to do everything and have put the weight of Boston on him. He’s Captain America, give him a little something to work with and he will win, but he’s not Superman, he can’t do it by himself.

Brady carried his teams for years with some help, not as much as other Quarterbacks like a certain Manning, but he’s had some form of help from his team in the past. A OL that protected him for years, some decent receivers that he made look better, but capable guys, and a defense when he first got started all led to 3 Super Bowl wins.

Sometime around 2006, the defense got a little older and then worse over the next few years, but Brady still had good OL and wide outs in Moss and Welker and led them to another Super Bowl appearance. Post 2008 though, Moss left, and there was no good threat at wide out except for Welker. The team provided him with two tight ends that were great with Welker, and Brady put up monster numbers and points from 2010 to 2012 and another Super Bowl appearance.  Brady gave them chances at the end of the 2007 and 2011 Super Bowls to win, but the defenses couldn’t stop the Giants on the final series in each SB.

2013 happened and Aaron Hernadez is arrested and the team doesn’t get another tight end knowing Gronkowski, who was battling injuries, wouldn’t be ready at the start. I don’t blame them too much for that because it was short notice, but still Brady started the season with Amendola (who went down in the first game) and Edelman as his only viable pass-catchers. Still, Brady went 5-1 before Gronk made his return, even beating Drew Brees and the Saints.

This off-season is different, they had time to find another tight end to go with Gronk and the Patriots choose not too. They also could have went after a receiver in the draft or free agency and only signed Brandon LaFell. So, Brady’s viable weapons are Gronk and Edelman, who are extremely talented. The others are average. Kenbrell Thompkins doesn’t spark the offense and he isn’t consistent. Aaron Dobson has trouble staying healthy, but also has been a healthy scratch far too many times and that doesn’t seem good for him or New England. He wasn’t good last year, but we don’t know about this season because we really haven’t seen him play too much. Brandon LaFell is someone the Pats and Brady really wants to shine but he’s struggling. Brady has targeted him 14 times through 3 games and LaFell has only caught 4 of them. That is one ugly stat for LaFell

Danny Amendola signed a 5 year deal worth 35 million the day Welker signed with Denver, and Amendola hasn’t been close to anything worth that. This is the beginning of his 2nd season, so he could get better, but so far, not good. Brady has targeted him 8 times in three games and Amendola has 3 catches. The last two games saw Amendola make no catches. In the past 3 games, Amendola has done a poor job of getting open fast enough for Brady to deliver him the ball. I’ve seen a few plays where he wasn’t open at all or when he did get open, Brady was already throwing to someone else. Amendola has talent, but he’s got to get going soon for Brady and the Patriots. Last week, Amendola should have had a touchdown catch when he got open, but Brady led him a little too far. The pass did hit Amendola’s hands, and if Amendola could have caught it, it’d been a great catch, but he didn’t. The thing is, we have all seen him make great catches before, but it’s not happening so far in New England.

Now, I will be fair to Amendola and the wide outs, not all of it is their fault. Most of it is, but not all of it.

The Patriots could get Amendola, tight end Tim Wright, and Thompkins/Dobson  involved in the offense more, and Brady could look their way more often. Brady has thrown some inaccurate passes, or tough passes to catch. Brady hasn’t been perfect either.

Now to the other problem on offense, the offensive line.

The line play has been the worst thing about the offense this season. It was bad last year and it’s bad again this year. Every team and every fan knows that if you want your QB to succeed, he needs to be protected, so is it any wonder that some of Brady’s throws have been a little off the mark? Or that the offense isn’t moving the ball consistently or effectively? If the OL gave him more time and he believed in them, he could do so much more damage on offense. Brady would actually be Brady again. Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, and Peyton Manning don’t do well when their offensive line can’t protect them. Peyton could only manage 8 points against a Seattle team that harassed him last year, and Rodgers struggled against that pass rush this season. It all comes down to protecting the QB. Brady isn’t going to make the season with this OL playing bad, and he certainly isn’t going to feel comfortable enough to be great behind this OL. He can’t feel too comfortable tonight at Arrowhead Stadium when in 2008 he tore his ACL against the Chiefs. And now, he’s playing them with this line.

The OL has to do so much better protecting for Tom Brady. The Pats drafted some OL but now its time to play Mr. Bryan Stork and they need Josh Kline in there. They need to change or they’re leaving Brady out there with the wolves.

Before the past two seasons, Brady had an OL that could block, and pass-catchers that could catch the tough passes along with easy ones and New England was feared on offense. It’s not the case anymore, or at least right now.

Tom Brady’s decline is mostly due to the talent he has around him and the fact the Patriots have become too cheap to offer help to their star QB. They’ve put it all on him.

I assure you, Tom Brady did not take a paycut to play with this kind of team.
