The Patriots traded away QB Ryan Mallett to the Houston Texans for a 7th round pick, according to NFL Nation reporter Tania Ganguli.

NFL.com is reporting that it’s a conditional 7th round pick. If Mallett plays over 40% of Texans snaps, the Pats get a 6th round pick, if not they get a 7th rounder.

That seems cheap for Houston to get a potential starter for and cheap for New England to get rid of Mallett, even after the bad preseason.

But, the Pats don’t like to carry 3 quarterbacks and they wanted to get something out of Mallett before he hit the open market next season.
