NFL Network’s Mike Mayock called Patriots backup QB Ryan Mallett a legitimate starting QB in the NFL after seeing Mallett practice against the Redskins on Monday.

“I was blown away today. I saw a legitimate NFL starting quarterback today backing up Tom Brady,” Mayock said after Monday’s scrimmage versus the Redskins. “So as the season progresses and we get closer to draft time and what the Patriots can or can’t do with him, I think they drafted Jimmy Garoppolo for a reason, as an insurance policy. But trust me, Ryan Mallett‘s a starting quarterback in this league, and he popped today.”

Mayock made those comments after one practice, but Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe has commented that Mallett has had his best camp ever in the NFL.

Ryan Mallett was asked about those comments today and he already knows what Mayock saw on Monday.

“I’ve always felt that way about myself, because I’m confident in myself,” he said, talking to reporters after today’s light workout with the Redskins. “I appreciate his (sentiment). Those are nice words. But I’ve always felt that way.”

Mallett talked about not worrying about his future, since his contract is running out.

“I live day to day, man. I’m happy where I’m at right now. I’m having a blast,” said Mallett. “I’m on a great team. I’m in a great organization. My teammates are awesome. That hasn’t crossed my mind. I’m just trying to do whatever I can to help the team every day.”

He was also asked since he believes he could start is it hard for him to continue to sit season after season.

“You can’t control, what you can’t control. It’s uncontrollable,” he said. “So you deal with it.”

We will see plenty of him tomorrow night against the Washington Redskins.

  1. […] Mallett has had his best camp ever this year and will get plenty of reps to show other teams he can be a legit starting QB in the NFL. […]
