Unlikely allies come to the aid of the New England Patriots against former Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.

Newly Browns head coach Mike Pettine started a wildfire when in an interview recently he stated he believed the Patriots had Jets playbooks.

Belichick responded in a classic way,[Go] talk to Mike Pettine. I don’t know.”

He also wondered aloud if Ryan giving Alabama’s head coach Nick Saban a playbook is the reason the Pats ended up with it because Saban and Belichick are good buds.

Now, Rex Ryan is responding and he’s actually defending the Patriots…. And himself.

Ryan, stole Belichick’s line to start things off, “Go talk to Mike Pettine. I don’t know.”

Ryan said it was blown out of proportion, but went on about it.

“I don’t understand what he’s trying to gain by it,” Ryan continued. “… Everyone needs to talk to Mike Pettine ’cause he’s got all the answers.”

Ryan grew more agitated addressing the issue and saidridiculous” numerous times.

Ryan also said their relationship isn’t very good right now, “in a bad spot now. … Like, ‘Really dude?”

Ryan said Belichick never had an unfair advantage against the Jets because the Jets defensive playbook is constantly changing.

“(Pettine) needs to learn to be quiet,” Ryan summarized. “Absolutely.”

Former Jets CB Antonio Cromartie, now with the Arizona Cardinals, weighed in on the subject too, and actually took the side of Ryan and Belichick.

Cromartie, once was the biggest Patriot hater while with the Jets, defends them against Pettine’s accusations.

“I think it’s all wanting to make up a story,” Cromartie said during a Thursday appearance on NFL Network’s NFL Total Access. “Because their team is not getting talked about a lot as other teams. I think that’s what it really is.

“I’ve been around Pettine. Pettine is that kind of person. I’ve been around him for my first three years in New York. I think it’s, you know, something he wants to build about.”

I can’t believe it’s a big deal if the Jets own Rex Ryan doesn’t think so and the former Pats hater Cromartie doesn’t either.

If it was, I’d believe Ryan and Cromartie would be having a field day at the Pats expense but instead they’re defending them.
