New England Patriots Super Bowl Champs

Broncos Vs Patriots: 3 Matchups to watch

The Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots are about to go round for round on NBC Sunday Night.

Peyton Manning and Tom Brady will be taking center stage on football’s biggest regular season stage but we all know that.

So who are some other key matchups to watch in this game?

I got you covered there! Read on and find out who you should be watching Sunday.

Trindon Holliday vs Matthew Slater

– A special teams matchup you gotta watch on Sunday!

Trindon Holliday is one of the best returners in football and everytime he touches the football he is very dangerous. Holliday has 250 yards returning on 25 punts he has fielded with one touchdown. He also has 16 kickoffs he has returned for 510 yards and a touchdown. That is impressive! And the last thing you want to do is give the Denver Broncos great field position or a free touchdown on a return.

That’s why the matchup of special teams is a big one on Sunday.

Matthew Slater is the best special team player on New England and he is their leader and will need everybody to be disciplined when Holliday gets a chance to return. Slater is a fast, great tackling special teamer, but he will have his work cut out for him when he tries to stop Holliday.

Last year against the 49ers the Patriots gave up a big return to set up the game winning touchdown one play later. In the postseason they gave the Texans good starting field position a few times that helped with Houston scoring. This year, that has been cleaned up a bit better but it helps they haven’t faced anyone like Holliday. If Holliday is having a good day returning then New England is in for a very long game so this matchup is very important.

Eric Decker vs Logan Ryan/ Kyle Arrington

– I’m not sure who will be on Decker in this game with Dennard expected to miss. Do they put the rookie on Decker or do they go with the veteran Arrington? Whoever is on Decker will be on Welker so this matchup is a big one.

I think Talib will do his job against D.Thomas and that is why I think this matchup is a very important one because Decker is a very capable wide receiver himself. Regardless if it is Ryan or Arrington they have to stop Decker and not let him become the favorite target of Peyton Manning.  Decker is a big boy at 6’3 and fast. He is a problem for either Arrington or Ryan, a real problem. He can go deep up the field, run routes, and be a serious redzone threat. The guy can do it all so who will stop him?

If Dennard was playing I would feel great about this matchup, but he isn’t so I’m not sure how to feel about Ryan or Arrington on Decker. Both are undersize but both make up for it with their incredible speed. I’ve seen how bad Arrington can be when defending the deep passes so I’ll go with the kid Ryan on this one but either way, I don’t feel overly great about it. If it is Ryan then he will need his great instincts in this game and his knack for jumping the routes. I think that is the best way to beat Decker and Manning in this game, Ryan’s instincts. If it is Arrington then he has to play great and have one of those really good games we get from him and not the game we got from him against the Jets the second time around.

Dominique Rodgers – Cromartie vs Aaron Dobson

– This is an interesting matchup. DRC is a 6’2 solid corner having himself a good season. He has 2 interceptions on the year and 13 passes defended. His counterpart Aaron Dobson is a 6’3, 200 pound big wide out, who is really coming along lately. Dobson gets plenty of looks throughout the game from Tom Brady and here lately they have been throwing his way at least once inside the redzone. Dobson could have a big game or be a big dud in this game. If Dobson can beat Cromartie then Brady will make him one of his top targets in this game. Dobson has shown great ability to be a guy that is hard to cover and a guy who can pick up yards and run routes. Dobson is a dangerous guy when he is on and he will need to be Sunday to help out Tom Brady and the Patriots. DRC is a good corner with good cover skills and this will be a very interesting match to see who wins.
