Has Coach Belichick Met His Match in “Big Balls Chip Kelly”

Author Mark Saltveit wrote the best selling book “The Tao of Chip Kelly.”

The book explores explores Kelly’s famous Chipisms: slogans/mantras that helped mold the Ducks teenaged players into a potent team with a 46-7 record. The book is broken into 33 chapters, each exploring a facet of Kelly’s approach to team building that can easily apply to business managers and those interested in strengthening leadership skills. Saltveit, who ran a computer training business in San Francisco, presents Kelly’s style as model business management philosophy: personnel-focused, critical analysis with equal parts positive reinforcement, and coalescing a group of newcomers into an elite, winning team. Coach Chip Kelly’s offense at Oregon was so powerful that Patriots coach Bill Belichick called HIM up for ideas and used Kelly’s no huddle techniques to destroy Denver last fall. Now Kelly coaches the Philadelphia Eagles, and the young hotshot will match wits with the legendary coach on August 9th, as the two teams face off after tumultuous off-seasons in a rematch of Super Bowl XXXIX. The teams are even practicing together in the days before the game. With the NFL’s two fastest no-huddle offenses going head to head, and a completely rebuilt Eagles secondary squaring off against a Patriots offense that lost its top five receivers, anything is possible. The biggest question is, how will Chip Kelly adapt his blistering running attack and innovative management strategies to the NFL?

Columnist Mark Saltveit, author of the best-selling book “The Tao of Chip Kelly,” will be in Boston discussing this and other questions in the days before the game. In his recently-released book, Saltveit delves into the New Hampshire native’s method of using business and spiritual strategies that took the Ducks to a BCS Bowl game every year of his four-year tenure. Kelly revolutionized college football with a high-scoring offense (averaging 48 points a game) and a gambling defense that led the nation in takeaways. Kelly’s success prompted Belichick to meet three times with Kelly to discuss the artful offense he ran at Oregon. Bill O’Brien, now coach of Penn State, then offensive coordinator of Patriots, coordinated the meeting between Belichick and Kelly. In 2012, the Pats use of a no-huddle, one-word offense strategy against the Broncos brought them an astonishing 89 offensive plays and a franchise-record 35 first downs, the eighth highest total in NFL history.  The moves have Kelly’s influence all over them; it’s no wonder Belichick asked Kelly for joint practices between their two teams prior to their Aug 9 preseason game.

Saltveit has closely followed Chip Kelly’s career since the Manchester-bred college superstar began taking the Oregon Ducks to higher ground. Having gone to college in Boston, Saltveit understood all too well when Kelly’s New England personality discomfited some in the West Coast press. Kelly has been described as intimidating, sarcastic, stubborn, but also is considered one of football’s funniest people whose,down-home, straightforward style earned him the moniker, “Big Balls Chip.”

Saltveit is tentatively scheduled to appear at Modell’s Sporting Goods store in Kelly’s NH hometown for a booksigning. (Date not yet confirmed.) Other appearances pending.

Mark will be at the Patriots/Eagles joint practice August 7th and at the pre-season game August 9th and is open to on-site interviews there.

In his other career as a stand-up comedian, Saltveit will be appearing Thursday, Aug 8th at the “Awkward Compliment” comedy show at the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square. The show starts at 8pm.
