New England Patriots Super Bowl Champs

Recap: Sleeping Patriots Wake Up Long Enough for the 23-16 Win

The New England Patriots start the game off like a bunch of sleepy giants. They only woke up with one eye open long enough to get the win.

1st Quarter: Chad Henne and the Jacksonville Jaguars offense drove down the field on their opening drive and scored a 3 yard TD from Chad Henne to Justin Blackmon. Patriots first drive ended with Tom Brady  throwing deep to RB Steven Ridley and the ball was tipped and intercepted. Why do the Patriots run deep routes with the RB, Wes Welker, or Danny Woodhead when they are all small, and not deep threats? The Patriots need to let Lloyd run those routes if they want to go deep, but they didn’t, and the Patriots paid the price with an interception of Brady. Jacksonville settled for a field goal to make it 10-0 before allowing New England to get a field goal on their next possession cutting into the lead 3-10. Jacksonville had an opportunity to add more points but kicker Josh Scobee missed the field goal attempt wide left, Brady, however, throws another interception with his pass intended for Lloyd over the deep middle. To end the dreadful first quarter for New England was a 53 yard pass play from Chad Henne to RB Montell Owens.

2nd Quarter: Jacksonville makes a 35 yard field goal to up their lead to 13-3 to begin the 2nd quarter. Tom Brady and mostly Danny Woodhead on the drive mid way through the second get New England in field goal range where Stephen Gostkowski makes a 49 yard field goal to cut in the lead 6-13. The Patriots defense gets a three and out against the Jacksonville offense sending Brady and company back out onto the field to run the potent two minute Patriot offense. Patriots start at their own 34 yard line and Brady hits tight end Daniel Fells for a quick 8 yards before going with a run to Woodhead for a yard gain, and then direct snapped it to Ridley for two yards and a first down. Brady connected with Welker to get New England to the Jacksonville’s 49 yard line on a six yard gain and hitting the two minute warning. Brady comes back from the two minute warning and hits Welker on three straight passing plays, making it four passes in a roll to Welker. First pass back from the two minute break to Welker went for 8, then 11, and finally another 8 yards. Brady connected with Lloyd for 8 more yards before finally hitting hybrid Danny Woodhead for 14 yards and the touchdown with 23 seconds left before half. Woodhead makes the catch in the open, slips, but regains composure to get that TD. Brady continues his TD streak with that pass.

3rd Quarter: Patriots take their opening possession of the second half down the field but settle for a 38 yard field goal by Gostkowski. Six minutes and change left in the was third highlighted when Marquise Cole intercepted Chad Henne. Brady could not turn it into points as he got sacked by Mincey, but was taken away from the Jaguars due to a roughing call on Mincey, however, it ended up not mattering because Brady was sacked again on the very next play which lead to their quick three and out. The scoring was halted but toward the end Brady hit Welker for a 25 yard gain then connected with Lloyd for 8 yards, and Bolden added a carry that went for one yard as the quarter came to a close with New England on the one yard line.

4th Quarter: Bolden got the carry to begin the 4th but was stopped for a loss of one, but Brady hit Welker for a two yard touchdown pass. The Patriots went up on Jacksonville 23-13. Jaguars got the ball up the field and connected on a 42 yard field goal to cut the Patriots lead down to a TD game, with the score now at 23-16. The Patriots went to three straight passing plays missing on all three to Welker, Lloyd, and Hernandez. Chad Henne hits Blackmon for 9 yards and begins the no huddle offense hitting Blackmon again for 17 yards. On back to back plays Henne hit Shipley for 5 yards and then Shorts for 18yards. Henne threw the ball to RB Owens who took it 9 yards to New England’s 8 yard line then Henne hit Blackmon for 5 yards to New England’s one yard line. 2nd and one, New England stuffed the run attempt by Jacksonville, then Jacksonville showing why they only have two wins on the season gets called for a false start, and that backed them up to the New England’s five yard line. 3rd and five for the Jaguars, Donte Hightower made a clutch play and sacked Henne for a 5 yard loss, and the first sack of the game for the Patriots. 4th and 10, Jacksonville goes for it, as Henne was throwing, defensive end Chandler Jones hit Henne affecting the throw, and Patrick Chung intercepted the pass.

Brady on a third and short play hit tight end Hoomanawanui for a 14 yard pick up but New England went back to back runs that lead to a third down play, which lead to Brady getting sacked, and New England punting the football. Jacksonville has the ball with 54 seconds left and missed on their first three pass attempts, but Henne hit Clemons to pick up the fourth down play with 22 seconds left, and hit Shipley for 18 more yards to put them in reasonable scoring range. Henne throws up a jump pass and Chung gets the interception to end the game.
