The Patriots lost to the Jets which makes handing out some humble pie a lot easier today!
The Pats gave a good effort against a solid offense and defense with half of their team missing, let me first say that, but now humble pie.
1. The OL:
I have to start here and sadly, these guys have been on this list a lot. Brady was sacked a few times and hit almost every time he dropped back. That is unacceptable if you expect to make it far in the postseason. Brady needs his OL to help out or else he won’t play till he’s 49. He also needs better protection if he wants to score more than 20 points.
2. The Running Game:
It was nonexistent yesterday, but it can be in a big way contributed to the offensive line which was doing poorly in run blocking. The Patriots don’t need a running game, but they are more dangerous if there is a threat they can actually do it. Against teams like the Jets that love to get after the QB a running game could and would help, but right now, they don’t have much.
3. The Secondary:
Not their best performance not by a long shot. The Jets were killing them deep with big plays, none more than Brandon Marshall. The Jets missed several deep plays that were there too. Butler gave up a way too easy game winning touchdown to Decker, the backup safeties offered zero help and Ryan struggled. It wasn’t pretty.
4. Logan Ryan:
Logan Ryan has had a great season and he’s very good, but he needs safety help and yesterday proved that. He couldn’t get it done against Brandon Marshall the second time around because he was without Devin McCourty. Duron Harmon had a poor game, he was late on more than a few throws, two resulting in a touchdown and a big 20 yard play in overtime. He left Ryan out to dry and Ryan couldn’t get it done in single coverage. He needs his guy McCourty back.
5. The Pass Rush:
They were nowhere to be found yesterday. I think the team had only one sack and very few Quarterback hits. Ryan Fitzpatrick against a hurting secondary had all day to find his big targets. The pass rush really needed to help the secondary and they failed miserably.
6. WR Brandon LaFell:
Where was he? The Pats needed him and he stepped down and out of the spotlight against the Jets. I get that he was the focal point of the wide outs for the Jets, but goodness, just one catch? He had to do more and be more and be a number one wide out but couldn’t. This isn’t his best season, but hopefully he will turn it around.
