The Patriots lose to the Jets in an overtime thriller, 26-20 giving the Jet’s life for a playoff spot.
The Patriots were without Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola, leaving Gronk and White to carry the load, making it an easy day for the Jets defense in the secondary. Gronk, still had a nice game even with the focus being on him, and White added a touchdown. I don’t know how, but behind a terrible OL, Tom Brady lead the Patriots to 20 points and forced overtime when he connected with James White on a 9 yard touchdown catch with a 1:55 left to play. On the drive he connected with Gronk twice on fourth down, the second one an excellent catch by Gronk.
The wide receivers were awful, some of the pressure and sacks were the offensive line’s fault and some were nobody getting open fast enough. Brandon LaFell proved he’s not a number one wide out and now we can hope he has a postseason like Amendola did last season otherwise this was a forgettable season for LaFell. He had one catch for 19 yards. Julian Edelman is important to this team, if he’s not healthy for the postseason or gets re-injured, the Patriots won’t win the Super Bowl. He’s that important to this team, the Patriots MUST have Gronk and Edelman for a Super Bowl run. They each take the pressure off of each other.
The Patriots offense was not healthy, it’s that plain and simple for what happened today, and the terrible play by the OL, it’s amazing they were in this game. If the Patriots can get healthy, they will have Edelman, Gronk, White, and Amendola for the postseason and they will be back in dominating form. Their red zone will be almost impossible to stop with White now a threat to score every time they are within the 20 yard line.
This loss did nothing to the Patriots except to prevent them from clinching the number one overall seed in the postseason, they can still clinch next week with a win over Miami. Do you play your starters next week? I vote no, but Brady will probably play.
The defense was up and down, but not their best overall game. They were without both starting safeties and it showed. Logan Ryan is really good, but he’s better when he has McCourty’s help over the top against great wide outs, and today with no McCourty, Brandon Marshall owns the day.
Hightower wasn’t 100%, I’m not sure he was even 50%, which is why it was so puzzling he played, he should NOT play next week. The defense did pretty good against the run, and even short passes, the deep plays got the better of them for 26 points, otherwise a solid outing. The pass rush was almost nonexistent in the game which hurt the team and put a little more added pressure on the safeties. Jamie Collins, however, had one amazing game.
In overtime, the Patriots won the toss but defer, giving the Jets the ball first, leaving many scratching their heads. Slater said, “Don’t we get to choose?” He said he was talking about choosing which way they wanted to kick, because they did want to kick but in a certain direction.
“We won the toss, we chose to kick off, just like Coach instructed us to,” Slater said after the game. “I was just trying to get clarification [from the officials] because we wanted to kick the other way. We weren’t able to make that decision. So… yeah, there’s not much to it.”
I don’t have a problem with it because you would hope your defense could prevent the other team from driving 80 yards for the touchdown, which they did not.
The Jets hit a huge play when they set up a pick play to Enunwa who sprung to the outside for 48 yards. One play later, Fitzpatrick hit Brandon Marshall on a 20 yard play where safety Harmon was late on the play. The very next play was on the 6 yard line and Fitzpatrick found Eric Decker for the touchdown, game over. Decker just flat out beat Butler on the play.
It was a great effort by the Patriots against a pretty good team, but the defense was more of a letdown in this game than the offense just for the fact the Pats offense was without a few very important players.
The loss like I said does nothing to the Patriots, they still have the first round-bye, the seeding is the only thing left for the Patriots to get, either number one or two.
The Patriots just need to get healthy because this is a very good team and the postseason is the only thing that matters now not the seeding.

He did really well, even though he had no run game, no blocking, and very few weapons. It wasn’t his fault the team lost today.
