The Eagles defeated the Patriots 35-28 inside of Gillette Stadium, the first home loss in a long time for the Patriots and the first back-to-back loss since 2012 for the Patriots. The Pats fall to 10-2 on the season while the Eagles move to 5-7 on the year.
The Eagles defeated the Patriots in the only way they could beat them and the only way Florida could have beaten Alabama in that Sec Title Game last night, special teams and turnovers. Florida didn’t do that, but Philly sure did.
The Eagles offense is bad, but today they spent most of their time on the bench while their special teams blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown in the first half and returned a punt for a touchdown in the second half via Darren Sproles. They also watched their defense pick off Tom Brady and return it 99 yards for a touchdown. The Eagles offense scored a whopping 14 points out of the 35 points they put up today. One of the touchdowns was due to short field position thanks to a surprise onside kick by the Pats in the first half when they were only up 14-0.
The Patriots scored early in the second quarter when Brady hit James White for a 4 yard score. The second touchdown was a Brady to Amendola touchdown from 11 yards out. It was one heck of a catch by Danny Amendola. The Patriots for some unknown reason tried an onside kick and everything changed from then on, and it kept going the Eagles way until the fourth quarter. Bradford hit Ertz for the score and then a punt block for a touchdown an then the interception for a touchdown, a punt return for a touchdown, and then Bradford to Matthews touchdown after Brady’s 2nd interception. The game was suddenly 35-14 in the fourth.
The game would hit the 7 minutes left mark and Brady and company decided to try to win and boy did they ALMOST, which doesn’t count, but they fought to the bitter end. Brady hit Scott Chandler for a 14 yard score and then sneaked it in for another touchdown after a successful onside kick. The Pats would attempt their third onside kick and fail, but the Eagles fumbled the ball away with just over a minute left in the game. Brady attempted to tie the game, but LaFell, Amendola, and Martin dropped three straight passes. Ball game.
LaFell dropped a few in this game and also cut off a few routes when Brady wanted him to keep going causing a deep ball interception and Amendola dropped a tough pass, but it still hit him in the hands and it was the kind of pass that Edelman routinely made. Amendola also dropped a potential touchdown catch earlier in the game.
James White did stand out, however, maybe giving Brady the confidence in him he had in Lewis.
The run defense wasn’t great, they weren’t on the field much, but it wasn’t the best performance. They miss Hightower.
Also, Brady caught a pass for 36 yards! Brady walked over, yelling at the line, and White took the snap, handed it to Amendola, who threw it to a wide open Brady. It was a wasted awesome trick play, Brady threw an INT on the next play. Brady’s one catch had more yards than LaFell’s 4 catches which tallied 27 yards.
Basically, the onside call in the first half, special teams mishap, drops, and no Edelman and Gronk really hurt the Patriots today. Also, I love Amendola he’s very good, but Edelman is the clear cut best wide out on the team. LaFell can’t be a top two target guy on the offense, the drops become a problem when he’s out there as a top two target. Scott Chandler is no Rob Gronkowski, but it’s just one game and they all had their moments. Let me say this, when Edelman and Gronk is on the field with Amendola, LaFell, and Chandler, it’s one of the best offensive groups in the NFL.
QB Tom Brady: 29/56 for 312 yards, 3 touchdowns, 1 rushing touchdown, and 2 interceptions. 1 catch for 36 yards.
RB James White: 10 receptions for 115 yards and 1 touchdown.
WR Danny Amendola: 7 receptions for 62 yards and 1 touchdown.
TE Scott Chandler: 4 receptions for 61 yards and 1 touchdown.
LB Jerod Mayo: 4 tackles and 1 sack.
Game MVP: QB Tom Brady.
In a losing effort and down by three scores, the QB made it a game behind terrible OL and wide receiver play. He tried his best, but too many mistakes a hole too big did the Pats in. But, nice effort.
