Tom Brady, Patriots QB, spoke to the guys on WEEI this morning, as usual after the Patriots games.
Tom Brady was asked about his goal line interception on a throw intended for Brandon LaFell, if it was his fault.
Brady, of course, took the blame.
“It wasn’t a good throw. That’s what my responsibility is,” Brady said. “And he and I are always working to get on the same page. It’s just one of those things that just happens in football. And you certainly don’t hope they come up at critical times. But I certainly could have made a better throw.”
Brady said Belichick told him how far he needed to go to give Gostkowski a chance at the game winning field goal and watching Gostkowski kick it through.
“We always talk about where we’re at in terms of which direction we’re going in,” Brady said. “Last night was actually a beautiful night for football. It was perfect weather conditions. Steve’s got a great leg. You don’t want to stretch it too far beyond where we were at, but we knew if we could get it down or around the 35 we knew he’d have a great opportunity. Certainly the leg strength to do it. It’s just, the further you get out, those things get tough to make. A game-winner from 53 or 54, whatever it was, he’s just so clutch. It was awesome.”
Brady was asked about playing ESPN, the network that treated him badly during the deflategate scandal, and how he would treat ESPN’s workers. He wouldn’t answer.
“I honestly don’t think about that much,” Brady said. “I’ve got so many things to do during the course of the week. I did say earlier this year, it feels like this year I’ve had more requests than ever. I wish I could fulfill everything. At the same time, my life is very busy, with my kids and there’s a lot of things. So I’m just trying to do the best I can do, kind of preparing for every team and making sure that’s my No. 1 priority. I know there’s a lot of requests beyond that, which, like I said, I try to do some of those things; I can’t really do all of them. As it relates to television and stuff like that, certainly there’s things that I’m required to do every week. I obviously do all of those. When you just add things beyond that, sometimes it can get a little bit challenging.
“I’m going to try, like I said, for the next whatever, couple of months, to hopefully conserve as much energy as I can and try to be the best player for our team. Because that’s what they deserve. And that’s what it’s going to take. Certainly I’ve got to go out there and try to be the best quarterback [I can].”
Brady talked about moving on for a while without Edelman and who will take over.
“Keshawn Martin is still obviously a good player for us and is hopefully coming back here soon. And I’ve got a lot of confidence in Brandon LaFell. Danny’s role has been very different than was Julian’s was for us. I just think they’re a little different type of players. And certainly Julian has been incredible for us. Incredible. And Danny’s had just a great year this year, and really continued from the way he finished last season. It’s kind of like when you lose a great player like Dion Lewis, there’s different ways you’re going to need to produce. We’ll need to find different ways to produce with the guys that are on the field.
“It’s just unfortunate to lose such a critical player. But you’ve just got to try to figure out different ways to get it done. Every team deals with injuries. We’ve been pretty banged up. Hopefully at some point we can get some guys back. You just keep trying to fight, grind your way toward the end of the season.
“I’m happy we got the win in the meantime. I think that’s really important, because you go on the road against a good team, you play really hard, you lose a critical player and you still find a way to win. I think it says a lot about your team.”
