Monday Morning humble pie time after last night’s epic win over the Giants, there are plenty of humble pie and doughnuts to be handing out to the Patriots players.
The humble pie goes to the positions and players that need to improve from the game.
1. The Pass Defense:
The pass defense of the Patriots needs to continue to improve. They bend and don’t break and make plays when they need to. They are young and they are improving and with the best test they faced all season against a very good QB, they held up. But, it could have been a lot better no doubt.
2. The Pass Protection:
Goodness, the pass protection broke apart a lot last night. It was one of the worst performances by the group all season. They have to get better, but they were missing a lot of pieces that hopefully come back next week.
3. The Pass Rush:
I haven’t re-watched the game, but I think they could be so much better. They, however, did get pressure on Eli when it counted the most and got a few sacks when it was most needed. The sacks or pressure wasn’t often, but it was clutch.
4. Creating Pentlaties:
Too many flags on both sides of the football made life even more difficult for the Patriots. There were a few that were questionable and shouldn’t have been called, but a few that was obvious. The OL has to stop drawing so many holds, one was almost a killer when it brought back a fourth quarter score by Blount. Way too many PI last night as well, although one had no business being called. Pats can stay aggressive, but be smarter.
Too many turnovers last night. Fumbles which could be put on the OL and an interception which will be put on Tom Brady. Turnovers usually get you beat, the Pats are lucky it did not get them beat. But, these two weeks in a row where the Pats have committed multiple turnovers in a game are not ideal. They have to get back to protecting the football.
Players who need to improve.
1. OL David Andrews:
He did not have his best game yesterday evening. He was pretty bad for most of the game, getting put flat on his butt a few times and gave up one too many pressure on QB Tom Brady. He was called for a hold that brought back a Blount touchdown, unacceptable. He’s been good overall, but yesterday was not his day.
2. CB Rashaan Melvin:
He was bad in the 2nd half when he came in to replace Coleman. He has the size but is lacking in ability right now. He has to improve, and hopefully he does. He was very bad last night trying to cover the Giants’ Harris.
3. CB Justin Coleman:
Yesterday was not his day as he was replaced in the 2nd half for his bad play. He fell on his face during his coverage of Harris which led to an easy TD catch for Dwayne Harris. This can’t continue to happen, the Pats need a solid slot guy.
4. FS Devin McCourty:
He was late, took a bad angle, and ran into CB Butler on the play that sprung Odell Beckham JR free for an 87 yard touchdown. He was also called for illegal use of the hands when the Giants were going to be flagged for offensive PI. He also gave up a few passes in coverage. He can do better and will, but yeah, he ate some humble pie last night.
5. Ed Hoculi and his crew:
They were flag happy last night and it almost cost the Patriots a few times. The Pats have to continue to overcome bad refs though, that’s part of the game. Hopefully the Monday night crew will be much better.
