Do Patriots Finally Have a Challenger in the AFC East?

New York Jets v New England Patriots

As a recipient of free bets online, you would be doing very well if your free bets had been used on either the New England Patriots or the New York Jets. Combined, these two teams are 7-2-3 against the spread over six games each during the 2015 season. They are specifically mentioned because they are locked in a surprising battle for the AFC East division.

Of course, it’s not surprising to find the New England Patriots leading the division at 6-0 straight up. After a Federal Court reversed QB Tom Brady’s “deflate-gate” suspension handed down by the NFL, he came out this season with renewed purpose to remind everyone who the best quarterback in the league is regardless of allegations related to cheating.

On the season, Brady has passed for 2,054 yards (second in the league behind Philip Rivers) and 16 TDs against only 1 interceptions for an insane 113.2 QB rating. His primary partner in crime, tight end Rob Gronkowski, ranks as the team’s leading receiver with 34 receptions for 533 yards and 6 TDs. Toss is a typically solid defensive effort and the Patriots are sitting in its usual spot atop the division.

The real surprise is the New York Jets’ performance so far this season. It’s worth mentioning that it was supposed to be the Miami Dolphins that were poised to issue a challenge this year to the Patriots’ lock on the division. Unfortunately for Dolphins fans, the team has played inconsistently, resulting in an early season stretch of surprising losses that leaves the team currently sitting at 3-3. That’s not to say they can’t still challenge after winning two straight. They are scheduled to play the Patriots in New England this week.

One of Miami’s early season losses were to the Jets in Miami. As has been the case all season long, the Jets used a stingy defense and terrific rushing attack to keep the game under wraps from beginning to end. There have also been decent contributions by veteran QB Ryan Fitzpatrick who has completed almost 62% of his passes for over 1,400 yards and 11 TDs.

No matter how one looks at the overall performance of this Jets’ offense, it has clearly been the defense that has made this team relevant. The defense currently ranks second in the league for total yards allowed at 283.2 YG and fourth in the league for scoring defense at 17.5 PPG allowed.

As a clear indication the Dolphins and Jets might be closing the gap on the Patriots, the Jets gave the Patriots fits last week in New England before succumbing to a narrow 30-23 loss in a game that went right down to the wire. The Jets went into the fourth quarter with a 17-16 lead. An early fourth quarter FG by K Nick Folk after a stalled drive at the Patriots’ 13 yard-line left the Jets with a 20-16 lead. Unfortunately, two well-engineered drives by Brady resulted in two TD passes in the last eight minutes for a Patriots victory.

The Jets’ defense was brilliant against the run, allowing only 16 yards on the ground. Unfortunately, they just couldn’t come up with an answer for future Hall of Fame QB Brady who simply did what he has been doing his whole career. All that said, it certainly feels like two improving teams (Dolphins, Jets) are getting closer.

With so much sports action taking place all over the country, now is the time to prowl the Internet for free bets online. A couple of well-placed free bets might be all it takes it build a nice bankroll headed into this year’s playoffs and Super Bowl.
