The Patriots and Saints held their first joint practice today in full pads.
Did Not Practice: WR Julian Edelman, WR Aaron Dobson, WR Brandon LaFell, CB Darryl Roberts, RB Travaris Cadet , LB Dane Fletcher, LB Eric Martin, OL Ryan Wendell, C Bryan Stork, OL Josh Kline, OL Caylin Hauptmann, DE Rufus Johnson, DT Joe Vellano, DE Trey Flowers, TE Jake Bequette, TE Scott Chandler, DT Chris Jones.
Tom Brady had a very good day against the Saints defense, completing 18 of 24 passes during team drills. He was 12-15 during 11-on-11s and 6-9 during 7-on-7s. Brady threw a beautiful 10 yard touchdown to Amendola behind two defensive backs in the corner of the end zone. Brady also hit Josh Boyce for a 55 yard touchdown. Boyce dove for the football and provided the “wow” moment of the day.
Jimmy Garoppolo had a solid day, completing 11-18 during team drills. He was 9-15 during 11-on-11s and 2-6 during 7-on-7s.
WR Brandon Gibson was excellent today, catching a sliding touchdown from Brady and another touchdown from Garoppolo. He was tied with 4 catches to lead the Pats with Amendola today in receptions. He’s been solid and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t make the team. He’s well ahead of Josh Boyce and Brian Tyms.
The defense was solid all the way around today. Chung sacked Drew Brees during the 11-on-11 drills and Dont’a Hightower forced Robinson to fumble the football. Chandler Jones dominated the Saints Terron Armstead during 1-on-1 drills. A guy who hadn’t been beaten all camp until today.
CB Tarell Brown continues to make a strong push to be one of the starting corners, breaking up two touchdown passes. He had a terrific day against Drew Brees and the Saints offense. He swatted the ball from Brandin Cooks and deflected another pass.
CB Malcolm Butler has seen better days than today. Brees was 4 of 6 when targeting the 2nd year corner, picking on him during the two minute drive. Brees hit WR Coleman on a short pass, and two plays later drew a PTI against Butler. Brees would find Josh Morgan for a 40 yard pick up and then a touchdown against Butler on back-to-back plays. Yikes! Butler is hard on himself, so I would expect a much better outing tomorrow from the young corner.
Drew Brees completed 15-22 passes against the Patriots during the 11-on-11 drills. Brees was just 1-5 from the 10 yard line against the Patriots. He did throw a touchdown to Ben Watson, though, thanks to a blown coverage.
The Pats defense showed they truly are a good red zone defense and it wasn’t some fluke against Rodgers and the Packers. Touchdowns have been hard to come by against this year’s defense so far in the preseason.
The Saints did practice today without three of their starting corners and two safeties.
Brandon Browner was present, but did not practice.
The Saints and Pats will practice tomorrow at 9:30 am and it will be open to the public. It will be the Pats final open practice of the preseason.
