The Patriots have signed LB Jonathan Freeny, according to the NFL transaction wire.

He played the past three seasons with the Dolphins and was a key special teams player. He played his college ball at Rutgers.

He had 9.5 sacks during his JR season at Rutgers and he’s a distant relative of DE Dwight Freeny.

He played in 12 games for the Dolphins last year, compiling 15 tackles and 1 sack.

He played 41 defensive snaps for the Dolphins last season, but played 273 snaps on special teams. He recorded 9 special team tackles.

Freeny is added depth and a camp guy, he might prove to be good enough to make a roster spot and be a core special teams player or more, or he might be let go of before training camp is over. Time will only tell.
