New England Patriots Super Bowl Champs

The Patriots release Vince Wilfork

The Patriots will not pickup DT Vince Wilfork’s contract option and will allow him to test free agency, Wilfork stated on Twitter.

Wilfork would have counted against $8.06 million against the cap.

Wilfork has spent 11 seasons with the New England Patriots, winning 2 Super Bowls with the team.

Wilfork returned last season after tearing his Achilles in 2013.

Wilfork had 47 tackles, 1 kick blocked, 1 interception, and 2 passes defended in the 2014 regular season. He logged in 6 more tackles in the postseason.

He released a statement on Twitter thanking the fans and the organization.

The move wasn’t a surprise, as most figured the Patriots would either cut him or redo his contract, and this was the move. They released him early to give him a head start on free agency.

They could still resign him to a smaller deal, but I don’t know if they will.

This is sure to be first of the many moves the Patriots will make ahead of next Tuesday.

I will miss Vince Wilfork if this was indeed his last season with the team and what a way to end it in New England with another Super Bowl Ring.

#75 will always be a Patriot.
