Tom Brady made his weekly appearance on Dennis & Callahan WEEI radio show. He talked about the Packers, the loss, and the Chargers.

Brady said it was a hard loss to take, especially when they were right there to win.

“I think you have some defining moments in your season and you have some defining moments in what could be people’s careers and you have a lot of things a great streak of wins going and the other team had a great streak of wins going, especially at home, was really dominant, and we said we can’t get behind early,” Brady said. “We got behind early, but we fought back and we hung in there all game. Finally, we had the opportunity to go ahead and we just couldn’t do it. We were kind of trying to climb the mountain all day and we were right at the top, and we had an opportunity to get there, and we kind of let it flounder away. I think that was the real frustrating thing for all of us. … These sit with you for a little bit and you have to move on and move past them. You have to focus your energy on the next opponent because it doesn’t get any easier for us.”

People have compared the loss to the Packers to the one Brady and the Pats took in 2001 to the Rams, who they eventually defeated in the Super Bowl, that season. Brady disagrees with that comparison.

“Truthfully, I felt like we should have won,” said Brady. “I don’t think there’s a lot of consolation. I feel like we are capable of winning every time we take the field. Maybe back in 2001 we didn’t feel like that all the time because we didn’t really prove that. I think what we’ve seen over the course of this season is — we’ve seen the best teams in the AFC certainly, with the three division leaders at this point and we’ve played some other pretty good teams, teams that will likely make the playoffs. Now to see a team in the NFC, and to think we beat the Lions and they were tied for first when we played them and then Green Bay was first in their division.

“I just felt like we were going to win that game. We went into the game realizing how important of a game it was and what we needed to do to rise to the occasion. I don’t think you could have asked for anything more — having a chance to go ahead with three and a half minutes to go in the game. If someone said you have a chance at the 20-yard line with three and a half minutes, you like your chances. I think everyone in our locker room would have loved them. We just couldn’t get it done.”

Brady talked about hating losses and showing his frustrations.

“That is the business that we are in, so we are here to win games,” Brady said. “I said after the game I thought we had a great opportunity to do it — going on the road against really a great football team, in their stadium, you can’t ask for a better opportunity than that. I thought we let it slip away, but we still got a lot of football left and hopefully we can rebound this week with San Diego. We’re out here already and it’s pretty early this morning, but we have to get a jump on the Chargers.”

Brady also talked about Gronk and a few other teammates meeting Bieber at the Clippers game on Monday night.

“I’m not doing anything like that. That time has come and gone in my life. I was doing a lot of Chargers work last night and sleeping. This is the first time I’ve been away from my kids for awhile, so I could finally get some decent sleep. Those guys should go out and have fun, they are young guys and it’s a Monday night — it’s an off day today for the players, so that is the time to do some fun things. Honestly, it’s something they enjoy. There’s comradery when you’re with your teammates when you’re outside of the football building and it’s good for those guys to do those types of things.”

Brady also answered why the Pats didn’t run the ball much against the Packers 30th ranked run defense.

“That is a great question. Truthfully, we didn’t run many plays. I think that is the big issue. We talked about that yesterday — we’re always trying to find a balance offensively and when you play from behind all game it’s hard sometimes to find your balance, especially when your play count is in the mid-50’s like it was. We’ve had plenty of games — like the Colts and against Detroit, the last few weeks where we were in the high 80’s. When you’re in the high 80’s you can run it a lot, you can run it 35, 40 times. When your play count is in the mid-50’s and you’re losing the whole game, it’s hard to get — and the reason why that is, is we didn’t convert on the first two third-downs of the game. We had third-and-1 and we didn’t get it and then we had 3rd-and-5 and we gained four and a half, and we were off the field. Up until five minutes left in the second quarter we had the ball for five minutes, so you can’t run a lot of plays when your defense is on the field the whole night because your offense can’t stay on the field.

“That is really where the complementary football comes into play, when you can’t convert on third-down, like we didn’t convert, then your defense is out there. They are the ones going down there kicking field goals and scoring. Basically we had a four-and-out and three-and-out to start the game. We have to get off to a better start so we can keep the balance we want, we can force the other team to play the run and the pass and I think that is when we are at our best offensively. We really have done a good job of that over the last couple of months, we just didn’t do a good job of that [last game].”

Brady talked about what he’d do with some free time this week.

“Truthfully, it’s a game and I don’t have a lot of time during a game week to do much. Yesterday was a normal Monday and then there’s a lot of work to be done on Monday. Tuesday, today, I have a little more time, but Wednesday, Thursday, Friday are just like a normal week, so there is really no time for anything. It’s not like it’s February, March or April even when I am not thinking about it, I am thinking about it. I just plan on getting my work done and resting up trying a great game this weekend. That’s what I need to do, that is what the team needs from me.”

Brady also talked about what the “leash” device he was using on the sideline during the game was.

“It’s a resistance band. When it’s cold out, I was just trying to stay warm and that helps me stay really warm. It’s a great exercise to do. When I am out there during the game, I don’t get a lot of chances to run around, like the receivers are running the whole game, so I like to stay really loose, as loose as I can in inclement weather. That was what that was for.”
