The Florida Gators are looking for a new head coach after a four year stint with Will Muschamp did not work out. The Gators head coaching job is a good one and a hot one, considering the talent pool to recruit from in the state of Florida and a top 10 defense already in place. Florida’s offense held them back during Muschamp’s career, so Florida is looking for an offensive minded coach, like Josh McDaniels.

McDaniels coached under Nick Saban at Michigan State as a graduate assistant. That’s the only experience McDaniels has as a coach in college.  Muschamp also hailed from the Saban coaching tree, but strictly a defensive guy. McDaniels has a connection to the school via Tim Tebow. McDaniels spent time in the Swamp working Tebow out before the draft and vetting the QB and then drafting him in the draft.  He also worked with Tebow during Tebow’s short stint with the Patriots last year. Belichick is a big supporter of the University as well, and so is Robert Kraft. They would offer high praise to the school’s AD Jeremey Foley for McDaniels, as would Gator great Tim Tebow. The connection is there and McDaniels makes sense for Florida, and it would be a great chance for him.

The question is how much of these reports are true? Who knows, but I’m sure Foley is vetting a lot of people now, including McDaniels, whose only head coaching job was with the Broncos.

McDaniels would fit the high character bill, considering he traded Brandon Marshall and Jay Cutler for their bad attitudes and went with Thomas and Tebow for their high character. He also fits the bill of having an offensive mind and high offensive success track record Florida is looking for. If he can develop quarterbacks, the fit would be ideal for both parties. The problem is we truly don’t know if he can, he works with Tom Brady, a QB that doesn’t need development.

I have always thought McDaniels could be a good head coach and could have had something going for Denver if given a longer chance. I don’t blame Denver for getting rid of McDaniels, I mean it has worked in their favor with Elway running things as the GM. McDaniels showed he was able to scout good wide outs, drafting both Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas. He knew Tebow was a winner and if he could have had the time to develop him into a decent passer, he might have found a lot of success as a head coach. Who knows, the biggest problem is, nobody has seen enough of McDaniels as a head coach to say how successful he could be and that reason could keep Jeremy Foley from signing him.

Many coaches, many reports, and many rumors will run wild until Florida hires someone, and half won’t even be true. Who knows if this one is only time will tell.
