Patriots Vs Packers: 3 Matchups To Watch

The Patriots will travel to Green Bay to take on the Packers Sunday evening. This will be the first meeting between Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady, which is sure to be an epic first meeting.

The Patriots are the hottest offense in the NFL right now, coming off their big and easy win over the Lions, while the Packers survived the Vikings last weekend. Rodgers and the Green Bay offense are hot right now too.

So, what’s a New England team gotta do to earn another huge road win? Well, win the three crucial matchups below.

1. CB Brandon Browner Vs WR Jordy Nelson: Browner and Nelson matchup size wise and it seems the likely matchup with McCourty adding help over the top to prevent the speedy Nelson from getting the big play. Browner didn’t do so well against the Colts tight end Fleener two weeks ago, but bounced back last week against Calvin Johnson. Browner is very good and very capable of shutting down any wide out in the NFL. If Browner can contain Nelson and limit him, the Pats will win this game. Browner overmatches Nelson in every way, but the speed factor, that’s where McCourty comes into play.

2.  OL Sebastian Vollmer Vs LB Julius Peppers: Big matchup here, huge actually. The Packers get most of their QB sacks and pressure from their linebackers, Peppers and Matthews. So, Solder, Vollmer, the RBs, Gronk, and Hooman have a tough task ahead. The entire OL actually will have to handle the Packers blitz because when they blitz Peppers and Matthews will be coming at Brady. When the Pats pass, if they can keep Brady upright, the Pats should be able to throw the ball. Limiting the impact made by Peppers and Matthews will go along way in keeping this offense hot.

3. DL Vince Wilfork Vs RB Eddie Lacy: The Pats run game will be tested for the first time in a long time, since the Bears game. It’ll be tested even more than then because of the Packers offense. They run just enough to keep most defenses off-balance. They have an excellent, physical, and very powerful running back in Lacy. Vince Wilfork will lead the charge against the Packers running game along with Lacy’s former Alabama teammate Dont’a Hightower. While the Pats absolutely can not let Aaron Rodgers kill them, they cannot let Lacy do it either. They don’t have to completely shut him down if they can shut down Rodgers, but making the Packers one-dimensional will go a long way for this defense. This is an important part of the Patriots success on Sunday, stopping the run. They can not let Lacy do to them what Miami and the Chiefs did. The run defense has been much improved since then, but a huge test on Sunday.
