The Patriots have suffered some injuries this season, the biggest one being LB Jerod Mayo, yet the Pats passing defense keeps chugging right along, while their run defense seems to be catching up, so whose the biggest reason this is happening for New England? Obviously, Belichick, but lets look at the Pats players and the most important ones who are making this defense elite.

1. CB Darrelle Revis: He’s the best corner on the team and pair him with Browner and the Pats have the best 1-2 punch in the league. We have seen in two AFC Title Games what happens to the Pats defense when they lose their number 1 corner, so it’s very important Revis stays healthy. The passing defense will remain as one of the best as long as Revis continues playing.

2. LB Dont’a Hightower: When Mayo went down the Pats needed someone to step up and be the leader, and Hightower did just that. He’s the leader of the defense, he calls the plays, and gets everyone in position on the defense. If you don’t get how important that is then look no further than Ray Lewis and Brian Urlacher, who kept their defense in line and in the right spot.  It was so fun for me to watch Hightower play chess with Peyton on the field and win most of the time. Hightower is a great player, he can stop the run, and rush the passer. He’s the man and the Pats can’t afford to lose him for the rest of the season.

3. FS Devin McCourty: He’s another leader of the Pats and he’s a great player. He’s one of the better free safeties in the league and since the Pats are very thin at that spot, they can’t afford to lose him. He helps the passing defense, he helps make it number one, and his abilities are unmatched.

4. DT Vince Wilfork: He’s the veteran. He knows it all on the defense and has seen and done everything. He’s a leader, he’s a big dude, and a great player. The Pats need him to help the other defenders on the line and the entire defense and to stop the run. Losing him would severely hurt the run defense and we all know that would be horrendous.

5. DE Rob Ninkovich: The Pats are without Chandler Jones for a while so they don’t need to lose another pass rusher. They’re thin there. Ninkovich is a clutch player and very underrated. Is he the best pass rusher ever? No, but he’s good and a clutch player. He’s dependable and when a big play needs to happen Ninkovich seems to be the one making it happen and when the ball is on the ground he seems to be the guy to recover it. His interception of Peyton was a game changer. He’s just clutch.
