The Washington Redskins defeated the Patriots in last night’s preseason opener for both teams, 26-3.

The Patriots did sit most of their starters. On the first series only Tommy Kelly, Vince Wilfork, and Brandon Browner were the only defensive starters that played. Logan Ryan entered later on. Tom Brady and Darrelle Revis sat out.

Ryan Mallett, who has been hyped up, and having a great camp, came down to earth last night. He was horrible, and that’s being nice. He didn’t show progression and continued to be inconsistent. To me, he’s always thrown the ball way too hard to receivers that are only 5 yards away and throws too many line drives. He has no touches on his passes but it’s just the first preseason game. He could shake the cobwebs and come together nicely before the preseason is over. Mallett went 5/12 for 55 yards and led the team to no points.

Mallett wasn’t down on himself after the game.

“I feel like I did a few positive things,” Mallett said. “A few things I wish I could do different, but that’??s what practice is for. We go back to work next week and get ready to go again.”

Mallett also doesn’t believe he’s running out of time to prove himself.

No, not at all,” Mallett said. “??I have to go watch the film ‘?? a lot of stuff we’ve got to work on, too many penalties.

“I felt comfortable back there. I mean, you never know what’??s gonna happen, who you’??re gonna play against. You go out there and do the best you can and, like I said, we’??ve got a lot of work to do to get better as a team.”

I don’t know what positive things he sees, but he’s right about having more preseason games to prove himself.

The only bright spot on either side of the ball came from Jimmy Garoppolo and Brian Tyms.As I have said all week, Tyms has developed great chemistry with both backup Quarterbacks and tonight he and Garoppolo showed out. The third stringers had no chance against this duo.

Garoppolo has struggled during practices but was on the mark tonight. He went 9/13 for 155 yards and a touchdown. He throws a beautiful deep pass and has the best touch of any rookie quarterbacks this season. It’s easy to see why New England has him for the future.

After the game, Garoppolo took the modest route.

“I did all right,” Garoppolo said. “There is a lot of stuff to improve on. It is a process. For any rookie quarterback, there is a lot to learn from, and we will go watch the tape tomorrow and fix those things.”

Brian Tyms stood out the most tonight. He’s been great during camp and was great tonight. I’ve mentioned that if he continues to have great practices and has great preseason games I’d love to see him move up the depth chart and in reps. He deserves that. I also said if Kenbrell Thompkins continues to drop passes or Aaron Dobson continues to stay unhealthy or unproductive, then Tyms could play. He can play and I hope he will continue to play for the Pats. He has real skills. He caught 5 passes for 119 yards and 1 touchdown. He should’ve had two touchdowns but his circus catch (which you can watch below) was ruled to have hit the ground, though it didn’t. He did catch a 26 yard touchdown pass from Jimmy Garoppolo and that would be the only score of the night for the Patriots.

Tyms expressed his excitement about how tonight went.

“I was just so excited because that was my first one,” Tyms said. “I haven’t been in the endzone other than practice, so I was just excited. Then, God gave me a second chance at it so I capitalized. It feels pretty good.”

Tyms also talked about proving himself.

“Every time the ball’s thrown to me, I’m trying to catch it,” Tyms said. “It’s part of earning respect, again. If I sit out there and drop everyone, everybody is going to look at me like I came here for nothing. I’ve got a lot to prove.”

You’re certainly not a dropper Mr Tyms.

Logan Ryan had a no good, very bad, awful night. He struggled all night along with the safeties and was getting torched by 2nd and 3rd stringers. Not a great start for Ryan.

Rookie corner, Malcolm Butler, had a great night. He’s been good in practice and showed up tonight on defense. He was the only defensive player to show up tonight. He almost intercepted 2 passes and broke up 2 other passes. He’s a good player.

The offensive line was as ugly as last year. Remember not all of the starters played but boy they were bad last night. Nate Solder got beat a few times and Ryan Wendell and Dan Connolly are not the answer for the Patriots at center. Bryan Stork would have this job after tonight if he didn’t get injured early in camp.

The defensive line generated no pressure on any of the Quarterbacks.

Basically, our backups on both sides of the ball except for a few were very bad tonight.

The Patriots will look to work on issues at their next practice and play better against the Eagles next week.

Oh yeah, there wasn’t a tight end in sight tonight. They played, they just did absolutely nothing.
