The Patriots finished their 4th practice of training camp, and the 2nd day in pads.

The clouds rolled in and the practice was cut a bit short when the rain began falling down on the practice field.

Did not practice with the team: WR Aaron Dobson (foot), CB Alfonzo Dennard, WR Matthew Slater, WR Jeremy Gallon, DT Dominique Easley (knee), LB Deontae Skinner, T Chris Martin, DB Jemea Thomas, CB Daxton Swanson

Tom Brady had a very light workout today, he threw twice in 7-on-7 drills and completed both passes. He only threw once in 11-on-11 drills and Kenbrell Thompkins dropped his pass.

Ryan Mallett had another good day, completing 3 of 4 passes in 7-on-7 drills, and 5 of 7 in 11-on-11 drills. He did throw the only interception of the day when Malcom Butler undercut a throw to rookie Derrick Johnson. It was Butler’s 2nd straight day recording an interception.

Jimmy Garoppolo had a good day overall. He completed 4 of 4 passes in 7-on-7 drills, and 3 of 4 in 11-on-11 work. He threw two beautiful passes today. He showed off his nice touch, which I think is the nicest of any rookie QB, when he threw it deep to D.J. Williams down the sideline. He also threw a dart between defenders to newly signed WR Brian Tyms. He did fumble a snap exchange between him and Bryan Stork.

When the defensive line took on the offensive line in one-on-one drills, the offensive line won 10-5. Boston.com has the full results of the drill.

“DL results: Chandler Jones (1-0), Vince Wilfork (0-1), Sealver Siliga (1-1), Chris Jones (1-0), Jake Bequette (1-1), Will Smith (0-1), Joe Vellano (0-1), Marcus Forston (0-1), Michael Buchanan (0-1), Zach Moore (0-1), Eathyn Manumaleuna (1-0), L.T. Tuipulotu (0-1).

(Missing one defender who matched up, and lost, with guard Jon Halapio.)

— OL results: Nate Solder (0-1), Logan Mankins (1-0), Ryan Wendell (1-0), Dan Connolly (0-1), Marcus Cannon (1-0), Sebastian Vollmer (1-0), Josh Kline (1-0), Bryan Stork (1-0), Jon Halapio (1-1), Cameron Fleming (1-1), Chris Barker (1-0), Jordan Devey (0-1), Braxton Cave (1-0).”

RB James White keeps having a good camp, but today he took the loudest, nastiest, and best hit of camp when Brandon Browner popped him on a run. Browner jumped up with excitement and the defense went crazy. He’s bringing the legion of boom to New England.

Justin Jones did an excellent job blocking, but has been inconsistent. He’s getting a lot of reps though, and has good and bad moments. The biggest thing plaguing Jones is drops, he has had way too many in camp.

D.J. Williams is getting a lot reps and is having a quiet good camp.

As mentioned above, Thompkins suffered through some drops again today.

I do wonder if New England is putting way too much trust into 2nd year players and Brandon LaFell, but it has only been 4 practices and maybe the drops will go away once the season begins.

Let’s hope.

Rob Gronkowski was limited again today, but did run through some running plays during 11-on-11s but it was light.

The Patriots are off tomorrow, but return to the field Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. and will be open to the public.
