Auburn’s running back Tre Mason is an interesting prospect coming into the 2014 NFL Draft.

Tre Mason would be a good pickup for the New England Patriots if they wanted to add another running back to their team.

Let’s take a look at Mason’s strengths and weakness and the chances of him ending up in New England.

Mason’s strengths:  A powerful lower body for a smaller back that allows him to break tackles, pick up tough yards, and finish runs. Mason has great vision and follows his blockers, and hits the open hole. He excels at stop – and – start quickness. He changes directions at a moment’s notice. Can break runs for big gains. Excellent kickoff returner. He also possesses great hands and is excellent in the open field. Even though we didn’t get to see much of him as a receiver for Auburn, he should excel at that in the NFL with his speed and elusiveness.  He’s a workhorse and shows up in the biggest games against the best competition.

Mason’s weakness: Lacks ideal size for a back. Ball security – eight fumbles the last two seasons. Could sharpen his route running. Played in an up-tempo, power-spread system.  Doesn’t have a second gear to pull away from defenses.

Tre Mason’s 2013 stats: 317 rushing attempts for 1,816 rushing yards and 23 rushing touchdowns. 12 receptions for 163 yards and 1 touchdown.

Tre Mason’s measurable: Height: 5’10. Weight: 205pounds

NFL Comparison: Ravens Rb Ray Rice.

Projected Round: 2nd round.

The Patriots lost out on trying to resign LeGarrette Blount, and had an interest in Darren Sproles. That could mean they want to add another Rb to the mix and Mason fits their system. He’s a good runner who can return kicks and excel in the passing game. All things the Patriots look for in a running back. He would be a great pickup if the Patriots wanted another running back.

Chances the Patriots draft Tre Mason: Low.

The Patriots currently have Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, and Brandon Bolden on their roster. They are set with running backs that they don’t need to take one in the 2nd round.
