Veteran Vince Wilfork has asked the Patriots to release him, according to several reports.

NFL Network was the first to report the news.

Wilfork is in the final year of his contract and is set to earn a base salary of $7.5 million and count $11.6 million against the salary cap.

Sources told ESPNBoston.com that the Patriots wanted Wilfork to restructure his deal, but the long time nose tackle doesn’t want to do it and instead wants to be released.

Wilfork was the Patriots first – round draft pick back in 2004 and has been the best nose tackle in the game for several years. He was the anchor on the Pats defensive line and was their premier run – stuffer.

Wilfork, 32, is coming off tearing his Achilles, after appearing in only 4 games last season.

In the 3 full games he played before being injured, Wilfork had 9 total tackles.

Wilfork’s career numbers for the Patriots are: 469 tackles, 4 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions, 16 sacks, 23 passes defended, 25 stuffs, 54 stuff yards, and 1 kick blocked.

Wilfork had a long, great career with the Patriots, but it looks like 2013 was his last year with the team.
