Patriots did not use the Franchise Tag on Edelman or Talib

Today at 4 pm the deadline for franchising players and came and went with no tagging of Edelman or Talib by New England.

New England could have tagged the WR or CB and kept them from hitting the free agency  market on March 11th, but they chose not to.

But the one year tag was too pricey for the Patriots to use on either Edelman or Talib with the team just being  $12.7 million under their 2014 salary cap.

The one year tag on Edelman would’ve paid him $12.3 million salary and Talib would’ve made $11.8 million.

The Patriots can create extra cap space by releasing a few pricey veterans and extending the contracts of Wilfork, McCourty, and Stephen Gostowski.

The Patriots can re-sign either player at any time. download

Edelman and Talib can begin talks with other teams on March 8th and officially sign with another team March 11th, after 4pm.

Edelman had huge success with New England in 2013 catching  105 passes for 1,056 yards and six touchdowns.

Talib was the best corner on the Pats team and has the size they love standing 6’1 and over 200 pounds. He shut down several top receivers last year, including Jimmy Graham, A.J. Green, and Roddy White.

Talib does come with a few hiccups. He has an injured hip that seems to be re-injured every season and has left 2 consecutive AFC Championship games.

The Patriots have made Talib the number one priority by talking to him first and not Edelman because they know if Talib hits the open market he will command big money and plenty of teams will be willing to pay. Denver might be one of them.

Edelman won’t command a huge contract because the NFL doesn’t pay slot guys the same as a Calvin Johnson type player, yet.

I think Edelman will 100% be back.

I’m hopeful about Aqib Talib.
