Patriots releasing Steve Gregory

The New England Patriots will release SS Steve Gregory today, according to his agent David Canter.

Steve Gregory had a horrible 2012 campaign with the Patriots and in the first half of the 2013 season looked like an improved player but around the 2nd half went back to old habits. He missed tackles and blew too many coverages for the Patriots to keep him another season.

Cutting Gregory will save the Patriots $2.85 million on the salary cap.

SS was a needed area of help on the Pats defense during the 2013 season and it’s even more a need to fill during the 2014 off-season.

Rookie SS Duron Harmon, who can play both FS and SS, had a good rookie season when he played. He is sure to improve leaps and bounds in his 2nd year, but the Pats still need some help.

Veteran SS Adrian Wilson is still with the team. He was disappointing in last year’s camp and preseason games, but was placed on IR due to an injury so his injury may have hampered him. He has said he is 100% healthy this time. If he can play anywhere near the level he use too he would be a great heavy hitter to keep around.

The Pats still should look to add another capable player though.

Will the Pats look to free agency for a veteran SS or will they add another young guy in the backfield?

The top SS in the draft is Alabama’s Ha Ha Clinton – Dix, but it’s hard to see him falling to the Patriots.
