Patriots vs Dolphins: 3 Matchups to Watch

The New Patriots will travel to Sun Life Stadium this Sunday for a matchup with the Miami Dolphins and if the Pats win they take the division.

This will not be an easy task though as Brady is 6-5 against Miami in Miami.

The Dolphins defense is ranked 16th overall, 23rd against the run and 13th against the pass. The Dolphins offense is hitting its stride and keeping their playoff hopes alive while the Patriots are coming off a big injury loss to Gronkowski. This is a good defense to test the Patriots O without Gronk.

Below I will breakdown the matchups that could impact the outcome of the game.

1. Jamie Collins vs Charles Clay

– Charles Clay, the tight end for the Dolphins, has totaled 14 catches for 177 yards and two touchdowns in the past two games.

Last week the Patriots couldn’t contain tight end Jordan Cameron so it is a worry going into this game. The Patriots will need Collins to step up in the coverage area and stick to Clay to keep him from being a problem like Cameron was. I would love for the Patriots to contain a tight end especially heading into the playoffs and especially since that team in Denver has a great one. Last week Steven Gregory did a horrible job against Cameron and I’m not sure why New England went in that direction considering Gregory has never been strong in one on one coverage especially against a superior athlete like Cameron. So this week I hope New England has learned their lesson and stick a better coverage guy like Collins or Fletcher on Clay so he won’t be a problem.

Collins against Clay will be be a great matchup to watch and one that is more important to Pats fans since we would love to see we can finally stop tight ends.

2. Sealver Siliga vs Lamar Miller

– DT Sealver Siliga did a great job lending a hand to stop the run last week against the Browns so here’s to hoping he can do it again against the Dolphins.

The Patriots would love to make Miami one – dimensional and a good way to do that is to take away their talented backs Miller and Thomas. As long as New England can stop the run they have a good chance to come away with a win.

Siliga is a guy to watch for New England fans who are unfamiliar with him or worried about the run game as this guy was solid last week and will look to have another good game.

Get to know Siliga this week.

3. Julian Edelman vs Brent Grimes

–  The Patriots best receiving weapon is Julian Edelman and he will be going against the Dolphins best cornerback Brent Grimes.

Edelman has been on fire recently and emerged as Tom Brady’s favorite go to guy on the offense. Edelman can run routes beautifully, has solid hands, and can go deep.

Brent Grimes and the Dolphins secondary have been a strong bunch this season and are looking to continue their dominance this weekend. They have a solid pass rush that helps their cause.

Edelman will have a tough matchup this week but if he has success then it should give Brady and Pats fans confidence going into the playoffs.
