Patriots vs Texans: 3 Matchups to Watch

The New England Patriots will face the Houston Texans and their rookie QB Case Keenum this Sunday at 1:oo p.m.

The Patriots are coming off a huge win against the Denver Broncos so it is safe to say they are flying high, and that makes it perfect for a let down against the 2 – 9 Texans.

A let down after a huge, emotional win or loss happens in College Football and NFL a lot. It is likely it will happen to New England this Sunday but that doesn’t always translate into a loss if the team is good enough to overcome it and the other team is bad enough to not take advantage of it.

There are 3 big matchups this Sunday that New England will need to win if they want to win the game.

1. OL Dan Connolly vs J.J. Watt

– Dan Connolly will have a tough matchup against JJ Watt this Sunday. Watt is a dominate pass rusher and can destroy any offensive line in the NFL. He is easily the Texans best player on the entire team. Connolly started off awful this year and has progressed to an average offensive linemen. He will get help with Ryan Wendell but Wendell hasn’t exactly been lighting it up this year either. Both will need to be on their best game to take out Watt and keep him from having a big impact in the game.

You gotta protect Tom Brady if you want the offense to do good and if you want the win. So this match is the most important one for the game because it will determine the winner.

2. Logan Ryan vs DeAndre Hopkins

– This matchup worries me a bit. I’m not sure if it will be Ryan or Arrington on the outside to cover the rookie Hopkins. Ryan did great against Decker last week and Arrington did great in the slot against Welker so New England may stay with that. Whoever goes against Hopkins needs to do good because Keenum looks his way a lot and loves to throw it deep to Hopkins. This worked well for awhile against the Colts before things kept getting worse for the Texans but it can be a strength for the offense so New England has to be careful here. Keenum has good accuracy with the deep ball and will take quite a few shots against the Patriots. Ryan will be tested and needs to keep up with Hopkins. Ryan has great instincts and ball skills and should have attempts to pick off Keenum but he needs to stay with Hopkins in order to do that.

If Ryan can shutdown Hopkins with Talib on Johnson then the Pats defense should be fine in the game.

3. Isaac Sopoaga vs Ben Tate

– The defensive tackle did not play a lot against the Broncos last week because of the scheme New England went with but that should be different this week. The Patriots will want to stop the run against the Texans and force the rookie QB to beat them. In order to make them one – dimensional and rely on a rookie QB to beat the Patriots they will need Sopoaga to lead the rookies against a hard running Tate. Giving up over 200 yards rushing is unacceptable and most times it will result in a loss so New England need to show up in the run game against the Texans in order for the Pats to win.

This will be crucial and the Pats will need to win this battle against a good runningback and give hope for the rush defense for the future.
