The New England Patriots traded their 2014 5th round draft pick to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga and a 6th round pick.
The 6-2, 330-pound, 32 year old veteran Sopoaga has been brought in to help stop the run for the Patriots.
Ever since Wilfork went down for the season and Kelly sideline for a few games, the Pats run defense has been less than stellar. DT Chris Jones has done a solid job but he is better in passing situations so teams have been running it right down the heart of New England’s defense.
They needed help so they went out and got Sopoaga, a very good run stuffer.
Sopoaga will stabilize the run defense for New England and when he plays alongside Tommy Kelly, it should make the run defense very good for New England.
The Eagles had signed the free agent and long time 49ers during the offseason, so the Pats pick up the remainder of the three year contract ($529,000 base in 2013) he signed with the Eagles.
