Jerod Mayo underwent surgery for a torn pectoral muscle today Yahoo reports, and may miss the rest of the season.

Reports say Mayo will miss at least 8 weeks if not the season.

Losing Mayo is devastating no doubt, but not fatal to this New England team. The Patriots have depth at the linebacker spot, more so than on the defensive line and secondary.

Mayo’s production in tackles and leadership ability can’t be replaced and he will dearly be missed to this team for the rest of the season or however long he is out. Mayo was also good at getting pressure on the QB especially in blitzing situations.

Dont’a Hightower, who was born to be a leader at Alabama, will assume the role of calling the plays and getting everybody into position, something he was responsible for at Alabama and one of the reasons New England took him in the draft.

Hightower, who is a great linebacker, will shine most without Mayo in because he will play every snap and be the unquestioned leader on the team. Hightower is also better in coverage than Mayo.

Hightower has the leadership, play calling, and tackling covered for Mayo. Hightower also has a ton of talent, a good pass rusher, tackler, and coverage guy, not great in coverage but good enough on some plays.

Brandon Spikes is a great tackler and run stuffer so he will cover that for Mayo and he is good at pass rushing and creating havoc, but horrible in coverage.

Jamie Collins or Dane Fletcher will be the 3rd linebacker in the lineup and both can cover so both will have that covered as well. Collins is also a pretty good tackler and can be moved around being a former safety.

Jerod Mayo leads the team in tackles and has since 2008, his first year. Mayo is a great player and even better leader, but New England, thankfully, has depth at that spot.

If we did not have Hightower this would hurt us more, so it is very important for Hightower to stay healthy for the remainder of the season.

There are 2 players on the team the Patriots can not afford to lose if they want to make a SB run, Tom Brady and Aqib Talib. Talib’s presence on the defense makes them better and since this is a passing league, his cover skills are much needed. We still do not know how long he will miss but hopefully Talib won’t miss much.

Bottom Line,

Losing Jerod Mayo is a devastating loss but not a fatal one.

But we will see as the season continues.
