Rob Gronkowski is set to make his return to the field very soon, and it might be this weekend.
The most common question being asked is will Gronk fix the offense and help Tom Brady out?
My answer, YES.
Last year Tom Brady was throwing to Wes Welker, Rob Gronkowski, and Aaron Hernandez. He trusted them, had great chemistry with them, and the result was lots of passes and touchdowns thrown to them and the number one offense in the NFL.
This year it has been Danny Amendola, Julian Edelman, Kenbrell Thompkins, and Aaron Dobson, and Brady has barely looked a tight ends way through the first 5 games.
Amendola and Edelman already have Brady’s trust and have been pulling their weight in the games they have played in this season. Amendola did great against the Bills before getting hurt and then made a solid return against the Bengals on limited snaps.
Amendola, when healthy, filled the Welker role along with Edelman. The great thing about Amendola and Edelman is they aren’t limited to just slot positions even though that is where they excel, they have the ability to get behind a defense every now and then.
What Brady is missing most is the big body guy in the redzone catching touchdowns and causing nightmare matchups, and that is where Gronkowski comes in. Gronk picks up the big yards and scores the touchdowns so when he gets back it will help New England to be 90% more effective than it has been through 5 games.
Reason I say that is because Brady will have 3 main guys he can trust and throw a lot of passes too like last year: Amendola, Edelman, and Gronk. I know there is a difference in Hernandez and Edelman, one being Hernandez was bigger, and could play anywhere like in the RB spot, and he also had the amazing ability of turning 15 yard pass plays into 50 yarders. Hernandez was just a freak of an athlete but Shane Vereen is the guy who will take over that role of Hernandez’s. He can move all over the field, and has the ability to score from anywhere on the field. He will be getting back to the offense soon too.
Brady will have weapons all over the field: The RB who can play WR and score anywhere, two good slots who are first down machines, and the big tight end for big plays and touchdowns.
The offense will be fine once everybody is back out on the field and healthy.
If Thompkins or Dobson keep getting better and emerging as targets with hands Brady can trust then the Patriots would have potential deep threats added to their offense which would be huge. Who knows, by the end of the season the Patriots may have 4 or 5 legit weapons on the field along with Vereen.
But when it all comes down to the playoffs, the Patriots need their defense to keep doing good and Gronk to stay healthy to go far.
Gronk should come back when he feels good and healthy and I for one, can not wait for that day when we get Gronk back on the field.
