Recap: Drops were the theme of the night for Jets – Patriots

The Patriots defeated the Jets 13 – 10 in a sloppy offensive performance by both teams.

Drops were a huge issue for the Patriots, mainly from Aaron Dobson.

I’m not going to freak out and complain about the Patriots offense, it has only been four days since their last game, and there’s a lot of rookies on the field who need a lot of reps. It will take a few more games for the offense to get on the same page with each other, and to get in sync with each other and finally jive to tune of 30 points or more. The biggest thing for the fans and players is patience with this team and the develop of each player. The thing that impresses me is the Patriots are struggling but they’re still winning, and they are not playing the best ball, imagine them when they are jiving.

WR Aaron Dobson started the game off with a 39 yard touchdown reception but that would be the only highlight for the rookie out of Marshall. He would have 3 awful drops in the game and one miscue with Tom Brady that would draw the QBs wrath.

Dobson missed a sideline catch, and followed that up with a deep pass beautifully thrown right to him which he dropped. Next series at the goal line, Dobson would run the wrong way, missing a chance to be wide open for a TD, and Brady exploded. Brady was yelling on the field, threw something down on the sideline and yelled he was wide open. Brady was beyond frustrated tonight. I won’t get on Dobson too much, I think most of the drops were due to butterflies, and nerves for the young kid making his first start in the NFL. The silver lining is Dobson looked uncoverable out there. He was always open deep up the field and even open on short routes, it was the drops after getting open that were the big problem. It is too soon to call him a “dropper” because it might have been the nerves working on him tonight.

Kenbrell Thompkins had a better game tonight, he didn’t run the wrong routes, and Thompkins caught a deep pass up the field to put the Patriots in position to make a field goal. Thompkins almost had a remarkable TD catch but since the ground helped out it was called back, but it was a great effort. Each game Thompkins is getting better, and I think that will happen for Dobson too. With the two rookies improving each game, the Patriots will return Gronkowski and Amendola soon, and that will help out big time.

The biggest concern to me isn’t the offense because I believe with a few more games they will begin to jell and improve, but the defensive line was disappointing. I know the defense recorded 4 sacks but you have to understand that half of the sacks were due to Geno Smith hanging on to the ball for too long. On at least two of the sacks the Patriots defensive linemen had like 5 seconds to get to the QB. The other 2 sacks the Patriots defense just flat out beat the Jets line. When Geno stayed in the pocket, and stayed calm, he had a very clean pocket with no pressure around him whatsoever. That is a concern because these 4 sacks are not happening against Peyton Manning who knows when to get the ball out, and he isn’t given you all day to get to him. The secondary for the second straight week looks really good. The secondary was the star of the night, and Aqib Talib recorded 2 interceptions and Dennard also had a pick. The secondary played good tight coverage and won the game for New England.

I never thought I’d see the day where New England would win a game with 13 points but they did and that is something to be proud of. No the offense isn’t where it needs to be but don’t worry about it, it will get there. Be happy that while New England is in transition and struggling, they are still winning.

The ending to the Jets – Patriots game was an ending of two teams who hate each other. After Talib picked off Geno Smith, he sorta took his time getting out of bounds and Nick Mangold hit him low out of bounds, and then a scuffle between the teams began. In the scuffle a Jets player threw a couple of punches, and another Jets player pushed an official, which lead to both player to be ejected. Belichick threw a fit when the ejected Jets players took a seat on the bench instead of going into the locker room, but finally the refs made the Jets players get off the field, and they took the long jog across the field to the sound of boos. When the game ended Belichick fist pumped in the air, smiling, celebrating this win, he looked very happy about it. It was a defensive battle, right up Belichick’s alley. Belichick and Ryan exchanged quick handshakes and muttered a few words and turned away. Now that is a rivalry game!

The Patriots are now 2 – 0 in the AFC East division. They get a much needed 10 day break before their next game.
