The New England Patriots completed day 10 of training camp earlier today. They held their first joint practice of camp with the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Quarterbacks: Tom Brady had a great day at camp. He was marvelous and treated it like an important preseason game. Brady completed 20-of-20 passes in 1-on-1s, 7-of-7 passes in 7-on-7s and 17-of-21 passes in 11-on-11s. Two of his incompletions were drops by Kenbrell Thompkins and Danny Amendola. Tom Brady and Danny Amendola communicated by hand signals before a snap that lead to a Danny Amendola TD. These two are very in sync with each other already, can’t imagine the damage they can do once the real games begin. Aaron Dobson, and Kenbrell Thompkins are separating themselves from the other wide outs along with Josh Boyce. Brady was firing touchdown passes away today. Ryan Mallett did not have a great day. Pocket awareness seem to be a struggle for him today, and fellow backup, Tim Tebow did not do well either.
The Runningbacks: Leon Washington had a great day today. He returned a kick for a would be touchdown 100 yards
out. LeGarrette Blount looked tough to bring down today for defenders. He hasn’t done anything back in Foxboro but he is better in live action because he isn’t fast but tough for defenders to bring down.
The Wide Receivers: Danny Amendola was the star. He made a diving TD catch thrown to him by Tom Brady. He caught a lot of passes today, ran routes beautifully, and except the drop TD toward the end of practice, showed good hands. He turned around Eagles DB, former Patriots Patrick Chung 3xs in practice. Aaron Dobson had a great one handed catch down field, but was benched after he and Cary Williams got into a scuffle. Chip Kelly after practice said he and Belichick agreed if any players got into a fight they would be benched, and they kept their word. Dobson sat the remainder of practice. Kenbrell Thompkins received a lot of reps along with Boyce, and both did good. The rookies for New England look great so far. REMEMBER it’s only practices, none of this means success for the season, just like preseason doesn’t tell you much for the starters, only the regular season will tell us how good they are, but they do look really good for rookies in their first training camp.
The Tight Ends: Daniel Fells continues to be a smooth runner out there, and getting plenty of reps, and will probably hold the starting job into the season and share with Zac Sudfeld. That is only a guess from how good these two have looked in camp. Sudfeld caught a great 20 yard TD pass from Brady today, and continues to impress.
The Defense: Talib had a solid day. He almost had a pick 6 but dropped the would be interception, and the Eagles Quarterbacks stayed away from him a lot today. Dennard had a bad day. He was being picked on by the Quarterbacks when throwing to Riley Cooper. Cooper caught 2 TD passes behind Dennard, making him look bad. Tavon Wilson and Logan Ryan was burnt by DeSean Jackson on a long TD. Duron Harmon is getting a lot of reps to be the backup safety against Tavon Wilson. If you ask me, Harmon is winning the battle. Jamie Collins looks good in camp too. Did a good job against the run and in coverage. Dane Flecther had a good day. Had a great breakup at the goal line, and a sack on Vick.
The Patriots offense performed better than the defense did today. The defense was average out there.
The Patriots and Eagles will hold another joint practice tomorrow and it will be at 12:30 p.m. It will be closed to the public.
