The Patriots completed their 8th day of camp practice on Tom Brady’s birthday.

Julian Edelman, and Shane Vereen were back out on the practice field this morning after getting nicked up

yesterday. Devin McCourty did not wear his no contact red jersey. Important since next week they will be holding a joint practice.

Recap:

The Quarterbacks: Tom Brady played one series and then was done for the rest of practice. Birthday gift maybe? Brady looked sharp with Danny Amendola, throwing two back to back strikes for touchdowns to Amendola. Brady was very sharp on his first series and only series of the day. Ryan Mallett received a lot of reps today. Mallett threw an interception to Devin McCourty who ran it back to the 5 yrd line then pitched it to Chandler Jones for the score. Mallett did good today otherwise. Tebow had a rough start to the day, throwing some balls into the ground and getting picked off by Jamie Collins because he held onto the ball for  a tad bit too long. The day did get better though, and some say it was Tebow’s best day at camp throwing wise. He was able to get a ton of reps in along with Mallett. There was a funny moment in practice where Tebow lined up at CB, Mallett at WR, and Beady at QB. Mallett made a nice catch down the side line. This was a preview for next week’s pre season game. Brady will only play a series or two and then rest of the game will be the Mallett and Tebow show. Tebow has progressed through out camp, but has to make his reads quicker and let the ball go quicker. Tebow might struggle his first preseason game, but that second preseason game will be better for him.

The Runningbacks: Shane Vereen was back in action and looked good. No signs of a lingering health issue. Leon Washington continues to impress in the return game and in the screen game.

The Wide Receivers: Danny Amendola started off sharp with Brady, catching two TD passes. If Amendola can stay healthy he will prove to be better than Welker. I said it! Aaron Dobson at 22 years old is a man child. Dobson continues to prove himself a day one starter. Michael Jenkins was out again today, and Kenbrell Thompkins is getting more and more reps, and is doing great. I think I need to change my projections for day one starters for New England. Aaron Dobson, Danny Amendola, and Kenbrell Thompkins. If training camp is any indication then that is how this will shake out, but remember it is only training camp, it doesn’t tell you much about the regular season or the success you will have. Even the Jets look good in training camp.

The Tight Ends: Rookie Zac Sudfeld received most of the reps at practice today, Sudfeld was with the first team and stood out.

The Defense: Rookies Jamie Collins, and Duron Harmon had interceptions of Tebow. Collins has looked solid all camp, he looks like the LB who can drop into coverage and help that weak spot of the linebackers out. Devin McCourty moved back to safety, and what do you know!? He made a big play there, picking off a deep throw by Ryan Mallett, and returning it to the 5 yard line where he pitched it back to Jones for the TD.

After practice the Patriots players gathered around and sung Happy Birthday to Tom Brady who turned 36 years old today.
