The Patriots completed their 7th day of training camp this evening, and it was an off day for the offense.
The Quarterbacks: Tom Brady had an off day, it wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t Brady like. Talib cut off a throw to Josh Boyce and took it for a TD to Brady’s dismay. He continued working on chemistry with his rookie wide receivers in camp. Brady did make a nice TD throw to WR Josh Boyce. Ryan Mallett threw a beautiful pass to Matthew Slater in the corner of the end zone for a TD. He had an ok day. Tebow ran different offenses than Brady and Mallett. The offense Tebow was running was more suited to Tebow’s style of play. At times, Tebow and some reserves have gone to the second field for seven-on-seven work and it coaching assistant Brian Daboll who is tutoring Tebow and it is showing up on the field. His passes from under center are still a little off but he has been impressive when rolling out, and has more zip on his passes.
The Runningbacks: Shane Vereen hurt his upper body in practice. It didn’t seem to be serious as he walked off the field. Ridley has been solid, and Blount made a good spin move in a drill today. Blount looks slow but solid. Ridley has been solid except for the fumbles.
The Wide Receivers: Julian Edelman made the play of the day in his first full workout back. He leaped over McCourty in the corner of end zone to make a TD grab. Unfortunately, on a play diving for a pass, Edelman came up limping. As he left the injury did not appear to be serious but who knows. Aaron Dobson made some catches as usual. He is having a great camp. Kenbrell Thompkins continues an impressive camp along with Amendola.
The Defense: Aqib Talib has had the best camp of any player on the team. Talib is working to prove himself this year as a dependable, hard worker, that is why he signed the 1 year contract to prove it. So far, so good. Talib picked off Brady today and has continued to shut down Amendola when matching up against him. McCourty played CB mostly today. He had good and bad moments in that spot. McCourty is a great player with tons of talent but he is better at safety than corner. Marcus Bennard has been a nice surprise in camp this season as he is trying to earn a spot on the team as a back up pass rusher.
Punters: Zoltan Mesko has competition folks! Ryan Allen is really booming punts in camp as he battles with Mesko for the job as the team’s punter.
After practice Brady address the media and did not show impatiences with his new group of wide outs.
”We’re making mistakes, we’re trying to learn from the mistakes,” he said. ”Offensive football is about 11 guys being on the same page and really being able to anticipate what each other is trying to do . . . a challenging part of offense is when you got new guys and they’re not really sure when when I’m throwing it and I’m not sure when they’re going to break. A lot of it we just have to work out. The more reps we get, the better we’re going to be.”
Brady talked about enjoying being around back up QB Tim Tebow. “I’ve really enjoyed it. He is a great guy. He is fun to be around,” Brady said. “He’s had a lot of experience and a lot of productivity. We have good conversation. He loves playing football and that’s usually the type of guys who do well here.”
The team will be back at it early tomorrow at 9 a.m.
