The New England Patriots wrapped up day 3 of practice at training camp. Today was their first full day in pads.
The Quarterbacks: Tom Brady spent some time during practice working on his throwing mechanics with equipment assistant John Jastremski, who was holding Brady’s left shoulder in. Brady had another smooth, good day tossing the pigskin. Brady threw a fair share of passes to rookie Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson. Brady finished the day running a two minute drill, hitting Amednola and Hoomanawanui on short gains then hooking up with Dobson on a deep throw. Brady tried to go back to Dobson but was picked off by Kyle Arrington on an under throw. Ryan Mallett had some moments in the day, showing his cannon of an arm. He had a better day today than the past two. Tim Tebow had a better day as well. Tebow had some “Tebow” like plays, and head scratching scrambles mixed with bad throws, but he did do better today. Tebow spent a few minutes alone with offensive assistant coach Brian Daboll, getting some solo instructions at the QB spot. Tebow, of course, continued to participate in WR/RB drills. In the ball-control drill, where defensive players try to strip the ball handler, Tebow handled himself well. Tebow made the final play of practice a good one. He hit Kenbrell Thompkins on a deep throw for a touchdown. Drawing a load roar from the crowd.
The Runningbacks: Tough day for Stevan Ridley. Ridley fumbled when Wilfork blew up a play, and Jones knocked it free, then the second fumble came at the goal line when Wilfork and Kelly blew the play up, and Wilfork knocked the ball out and recovered it. Ridley had to run laps afterwards. Ridley has had fumbling issues before, hopefully he will figure out a way to clean it up.
The Wide Recievers: Danny Amendola had two drops today. Amendola spent most of camp working with Brady with the first team reps, and Amendola had another solid outing even though it was a quieter day for him. Josh Boyce had a big play in camp, timing a jump perfectly to make the catch over the shoulder of rookie corner Logan Ryan. Dobson had a good day as well, making some good plays, but not as good as yesterday. The focus today was mainly on the running game, and the offensive and defensive line.
The Tight Ends: Daniel Fells had a fumble in today’s session. A strip from Collins caused the veteran tight end to put it on the ground. Fells, though has had a solid outing since camp has begun. He might end up with extra reps heading into pre-season if he continues to impress out there. Fells is smooth, and makes it seem effortless the way he gets open and makes catches.
The Defense: Hightower, a second year player is becoming more vocal, and more of a leader on the field. Jerod Mayo has a big presence out there, and Spikes is continuing to dominate the run game. Wilfork had a great day, blowing up plays in the back field, causing a fumble, and recovering it. Tommy Kelly beside Wilfork is a intimidating scene on the defensive line. Arrington had a good day, stripping some passes, and intercepting a Tom Brady pass. Talib looked good out there as well, making plays on Amendola through out the day.
The Kicker: Gostkowski made 5 out of 7 field goal attempts today. His two misses were 36 yards out, and 47 yards out. His makes were between 30-44 yards.
The Patriots will conduct a night practice tomorrow for season ticket holders and residents of Foxborough. You must have a ticket to get in.
