The Patriots held their first practice of training camp today in a rain soaked event.
The Quarterbacks: Tom Brady or bust. That is what you saw out there today, Brady was sharp and had a good day of practice, the other two? Not so much. Ryan Mallet is in his third year and the question mark on him is his accuracy and timing, both were in question today. He threw a lot of balls behind his intended receivers and struggled overall through out practice. Tebow didn’t fair well in his showing today. Tebow threw two interceptions, and one terribly thrown ball that ended up on the ground halfway before getting to the WR. Tebow also ran too much for a training camp practice in the QB spot. It is a perfect time to drop back, make the reads, and throw the football, instead he is stilling showing his mentality is still that of a runner. Tebow also played other positions where he caught two passes in today’s session. One from Brady, the other from Mallet.
The runningbacks: They had a bad day of dropping passes in the passing drills. Other than that, they did well, especially Leon Washington in the returning game.
The receivers: Aaron Dobson was impressive in his route running and his plays on the ball. Dobson got plenty of reps with Brady, and Amendola in today’s session, a good sign for the rookie draft pick. Dobson has all the skills to be a legit deep threat in the NFL. Michael Jenkins took most of the first team reps with Danny Amendola. Jenkins looks like he could prove to be a reliable chain mover for New England. Amendola continues to be the most impressive WR out there. Amendola is showing his quickness, hands, and playmaking ability, if he can stay healthy this year, he will have a tremendous season. Amendola made an excellent catch on the left sideline where he was almost laying on his back to make the grab after beating Dennard. The tight end Jake Ballard finally was able to get out there with Tom Brady today. The practice session was a rusty one for the former Giants tight end. Ballard had a lot of drops throughout the practice as he is still trying to get chemistry with Brady.
The defense: Chandler Jones looked good out there, consistently putting “pressure” on the non-contact, red QB jerseys. Jones also made a diving INT of Tim Tebow in the practice session. Wilson, and McCourty played in the safeties spot, while Arrington practiced with the first team over Dennard.
The practice was a solid one to start this year off right for New England, and a quiet one which is very welcoming for this team.
