Patriots draft picks

The Patriots traded out of the first round to acquire more picks and it has paid off, or it seems that way. The Patriots get good value with their second round picks.

The Patriots drafted  Southern Mississippi defensive end/linebacker Jamie Collins with pick number 52, who fills a need for a coverage LB. Collins is a good pass rusher, and can cover, something the Patriots need at their linebacking position. Collins initially played defensive back at Southern Miss., but moved to linebacker as a sophomore. He finished his SR season at Southern Miss with 20 tackles for losses and 10 sacks. Collins stands 6’3 and weighs 250 pounds. The Patriots filled a need at LB with a great player for good value.

The Patriots drafted WR Aaron Dobson with pick 59, their second pick in the second round. Dobson is 6’3 and weighs 210 pounds. Dobson played at Marshall like former Patriot Randy Moss, and he reminds me of Randy Moss. Dobson has solid speed, great hands, great at jump passes, deep threat, redzone threat, football smart, and run routes. The Patriots get all of that in one WR in the second round. Dobson was thrown to 92 times last season and dropped ZERO passes. Dobson was a great pick up for New England, and I look for him to make a huge impact for New England this season. He will help Tom Brady in the redzone, giving Tom Brady another redzone weapon with Gronkowski. It will be hard to keep New England to field goals now. This pick also gives Tom Brady a legit deep threat since Randy Moss.

With both 3rd round picks the Patriots took two Rutgers back to back. First was CB Logan Ryan with the 83rd pick. He is 5’11 and weighs 191 pounds. “He’s been very productive. He’s one of the most productive corners in the draft,” Belichick said. “He’s been in a very good system. He’s been well-coached, knows his techniques well, he’s an instinctive player. He’s tough, a good tackler.” Ryan in his final two seasons had 38 passes defended and 7 ints. Has long arms, might have trouble with big wideouts, but he might make a great slot WR. New England took a good value pick, and if he works out it will be a steal.

With the second pick in the 3rd (91st pick) the Patriots took a guy nobody expected them too this early, safety Duron Harmon. Patriots usually take off the radar players in mid rounds of the draft. Harmon is 6’1 and weighs 200 pounds. He was not invited to the combine, and both ESPN and the NFL Network, who have hundreds of highlight packages ready for players who are drafted, did not have one for him. The Patriots drafted another big safety here, they have definitely gotten bigger in the secondary. Harmon can turn out to be a very pleasant pick for New England, he is a low risk, high reward player. I really like Harmon, I like him as much as Ryan maybe even more. Hard hitter, has a nose for the football, and makes plays. He can bail out the corners a lot in coverage, has good instincts, and is a good tackler.
