New England Patriots Super Bowl Champs

Draft Focus: OLB Jarvis Jones

We are continuing our look at potential Patriots with OLB Jarvis Jones. Jones began his freshman year at USC before transferring to Georgia two years later.

College Stats:

2011: 70 Tackles, 19.5 TFL, and 13.5 Sacks.

2012: 85 Tackles, 24.5 TFL, 14.5 Sacks, 1 INT, and 7 FF.

In college, Jones grew better and better every season, and his tackle for loss numbers are outstanding. He average double digit sacks each season he spent with Georgia in the SEC. Jarvis Jones reminds me a lot of Dwight Freeney by his speed. He has such explosive speed off the snap, gets around the linemen quickly and can chase plays down. He will be best at rush LB in the NFL.

Jones is likely a first round pick.

To me, he is the best pass rusher in the draft this year.

Strengths: He is explosive off the snap, uses his speed to beat linemen and can dip around them to get to the QB in a hurry. A pure pass rusher. Good tackler. Chase plays well, will take them to the sidelines. Good at Strip-Sacks of the QB.

Weakness: Health concerns. Has spinal stenosis diagnosis but was given clean bill of health. Neck Injury that cut his freshman season short and cost him to miss entire second season with USC. Relies mostly on his speed to get pressure on QB.

The likelihood the Patriots draft Jones on a scale of 1-10(1 being least likely, 10 being most likely) is a 3. The main reason is because Jarvis Jones will not make it to the 29th pick overall. Even though most experts believe he has fallen down the draft board to the mid first round, he will still be gone before the Patriots get to draft. Jones is the kind of guy you move up to take, but with the limited draft picks New England has I doubt they will.
