The New England Patriots released WR Brandon Lloyd today. Lloyd was due a $3 million roster bonus this weekend. Lloyd was scheduled to earn a base salary of $1.9 million in 2013, which would have come with a salary cap charge of $4.9 million. The Patriots were open to keeping Lloyd with a reduced salary but it is obvious the two sides could not strike a deal, prompting New England to release him to avoid a salary cap hit.
There is a chance Brandon Lloyd re-signs with the New England Patriots though, if the two can reach an agreement that works for both sides. There might not be many options for Lloyd and that might prompt him to take less money to play for the Patriots again.
