The New England Patriots have put “feelers” out there on a few different cornerbacks, and all of them are very talented. The New England Patriots are just trying to get a feel for what the top prospects are looking for in free agency and their price tags, but it is clear they have cornerbacks on their mind. They want to upgrade the position and I can see why, and their options are looking good for them.
CB Derek Cox is one of the cornerbacks the Patriots are interested in. Cox is 26 years old with good size, standing at 6’1 and weighing in at 195 pounds. In the 2012 season Cox had 60 tackles, 11 passes defended, and four interceptions in 12 games. Cox is a good coverage corner, and is good at knocking balls away from wide outs, something New England needs. Derek Cox was released by Jacksonville Jaguars.
CB Chris Gamble was released by the Carolina Panthers and is turning 30 years old, and only played in four games for the Panthers in the 2012 season. In 2011, he had a great season, getting 3 interceptions that season, only gave up 2 touchdowns, and only allowed 45% of passes his way to be completed. He is a shut down corner who also has good size, he stands 6’1 and weighs in at 205 pounds.
Sean Smith CB for the Miami Dolphins was released and is one of the top candidates at that position in this year’s free agency. He is a young CB at the age of 25 years old, with great size, standing 6’3 and weighing 218 pounds. Smith in 2012 finished with 59 tackles, 12 passes defended, and two interceptions. Smith only missed one game over the past four seasons which means he can provide New England with durability, something New England has lacked with their secondary, not to mention that amazing size. Smith’s coverage was up and down in 2012 but he only allowed 6 touchdowns and did not allow a gain over 31 yards, something that has also been a problem with New England.
Any three of these corners would be a mega upgrade for New England. I could see them taking at least two out of the three. Sean Smith and Chris Gamble is my guess but who knows, I’d take any of combination. I would love to have Sean Smith and Derek Cox. How amazing would it be if New England could get all 3 of them? Wishful thinking.
