Adam Schefter tweeted today that “Patriots free-agent WR Wes Welker has no plans to re-sign with New England before first testing the free-agent market next week.”
If Welker stays, it will be up to him, because New England has done everything they can to keep the slot WR. The Patriots can’t pay him like a Calvin Johnson, and they have offered him a lot of money, but the Patriots will not over pay his worth. They want to avoid that. When free agency begins, Welker will test the market, to see his worth. If a team is willing to offer the amount he wants, and New England won’t match it, then Welker walks. The biggest question is, is there a team out there that is willing to pay him a large amount of money? The team with the most money to spend this off season is the Cincinnati Bengals. They might look to add a slot WR with A.J. Green, they have the kind of money Welker wants, but who knows if they have any interest in him. The teams that would have interest in Welker is the Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans(his home state), and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The most likely one to pay will be the Buccaneers as they are reported to be highly interested in the wide out. If Welker walks, he is most likely to go to a average to bad team, who doesn’t have an established QB. It all comes down to Wes Welker’s greed vs his will to win. Lets remember this, Welker needs New England more then they need him, they will be alright if he walks because Tom Brady is still in his prime.
