Patriots opt Not to use their Franchise Tag

The Patriots had 3 big players they could have tagged this year, but decided not too. The three players were, WR Wes Welker, CB Aqib Talib, and OL Sebastian Vollmer. The Patriots probably went this direction due to how rich the tags would be, they were not willing to pay them a lot of money for one season. Welker’s tag would have been 11.4 million. A 20% raise from the tag he received last season. Talib’s tag would have cost New England 10.854 million. Vollmer’s tag would have been 9.828 million. They all 3 now have a chance to test the free agency market. They might like to see what their value is before committing to New England. If they hit the market, Talib would be the hardest to retain because he will have a handful of teams offering him high contracts that New England will not be able to match, or not willing to match. Welker, of course, would have a hard time returning to New England if he test the market because he will have a few teams offering him big contracts. The Patriots will continue to work to try to retain all three guys, ideally before free agency begins.
