New England Patriots Super Bowl Champs

New England should use their freedom in cap space to get Defensive Players

The defense wasn’t good enough to win the Super Bowl against the Giants in 2011, and they wasn’t good enough to win the AFC Championship Game against the Ravens. To also point out, the offense wasn’t good enough in the Super Bowl to win it either, or in the AFC Championship Game. It was a collective effort of why New England did not win those games. Face it though, the defense can’t pick up the slack for the few games the offense is bad, they can’t keep New England in games or make critical stops. When the game is on the line, nobody wants to have to leave it up to this defense to win it for the Patriots. The Patriots defense has made baby steps the past two seasons, but they are still one of the worse passing defenses.

If the Patriots are serious about winning another Super Bowl then they need to sign defensive players that can play right now and help win another one during the Tom Brady era. Tom Brady re-did his contract to save the Patriots 15 million dollars in cap space, so New England needs to use this extra space in cap to get defensive players.

The first one is Aqib Talib, they have the freedom to either franchise tag him or give him a deal, and they need it done before free agency begins because Talib will have teams lined up for him, offering him big money, which will make it harder to resign him back. When Talib was in the game against the Ravens, Flacco and company had a hard time moving the football, and Boldin was being shut down, but when Talib went out, the Ravens passed it almost every down and was successful, and Boldin had a monster game. Talib allowed New England to be aggressive on defense. Talib made a big impact on the defensive secondary, and should be brought back by New England, to further be successful in the secondary. Talib is physical, big, good coverage corner, and has swag.

The second one is Dwight Freeney, the pure pass rusher. Freeney is an amazing pass rusher, and is one of the best pass rushers in the game. The Patriots have guys who can stop the run, they don’t have anybody who can rush the QB from the line with consistency, and Dwight Freeney can. Freeny isn’t the best run stopper, but New England doesn’t need that, they need a pass rusher, and Freeney is the purest form of that, and he is great at that. In a Belichick defense, Freeney would have another great year, and he would give New England the ability to pass rush.

The third one is Ed Reed, the safety. Reed is physical, strong, fast, play maker, veteran, and leader. All of these qualities are what the Patriots could use. The Patriots need a leader on defense, and a veteran presence, that can help the other players out there on defense. Reed has swag too, Reed is one of those players that instantly makes the team better as a whole defense. Reed allows New England to continue aggressive play, and to do more of it, which is when the Patriots defense plays their best. The Patriots need Ed Reed, and with him they fix their safety area, as him and McCourty would sure up the safety spot. Add Talib, your whole secondary is fixed, and all you need then is depth.

The New England Patriots defense has continued to be one of the worst passing defenses in the NFL, year after year, and this year the players are there and New England has the money to be able to finally fix their defense. The Patriots will never win another Super Bowl if they do not fix their defense. Defenses play a big role in who wins the Super Bowl, and its been since 2005 since the Patriots have had a legit threat of a Super Bowl capable defense. The defense however, became real awful around the 2008 season. The defense has to be fix, Tom Brady needs help on both sides of the football, but the biggest area of need is the defense. Maybe this is the year New England spends the money on the right free agents to fix this defense.
