Russell Shepard, the wide out from LSU, who also played some RB and wildcat at LSU, is entering this year’s draft. Some draft experts believe Shepard will be anywhere from a 6th rd pick to 7th rd pick, or a undrafted free agent signee. The Patriots could get a draft steal with Shepard, he played almost identical to the way Randall Cobb(Packers WR) did in college at Kentucky. Cobb ran the wildcat and played wide receiver for the Kentucky Wildcats, but he was feature a lot more in their offense, which lead to his 2nd round over all selection by the Packers. He has made an instant impact for the Packers, adding another weapon for QB Aaron Rodgers. Shepard is a lot like Cobb, speed, height, and weight wise. I think Shepard could do for New England what Cobb has done for the Packers. LSU hasn’t really proved they can mold any offensive weapons aside from RBs. They run well, but their QBs struggle there, Matt Flynn was their QB and didn’t look special, even though he won a National Title with the team. He looked like a well molded QB after a few years with the Packers. I don’t judge LSU weapons till they are in the NFL. LSU didn’t use Shepard much this past season, but Shepard quickness to get separation, and his agility makes him an like able candidate heading into the NFL.
I’m kind of sick of the Patriots getting wide receivers who don’t break the 5-11 ft. tall mold. I like bigger wide outs, but I’ll take one or two small ones, if they are fast enough to get open. Shepard is 6’0, 195 pds. Blazing speed, who has great cuts, and ability to get away from tacklers. New England could use his speed for their team, regardless if Welker goes or stays. Edelman can’t come back, if you ask me, regardless, if Welker does or doesn’t. The Patriots can afford to keep Welker, if they go to the draft to fill the need of an deep threat. Past two season has shown the Patriots need more then just Welker and the two tight ends, because when they meet a physical team or a well rounded defense, they struggle to get open and struggle to score.Lloyd or Wes Welker has to go, I don’t want to keep them both. One of them can be the slot wide out, the other departure, and New England goes to the draft. Shepard can be a slot wide out, opposite Welker, who can go deep due to his speed and athleticism, because Welker can’t, far to short, he’s an slot only, kind-of-guy. Shepard can fill the other slot position, he will be cheap, and be a draft steal for New England. Randall Cobb is 5’10 and with his speed, he gets open on the regular for Green Bay, so Shepard can use his speed to be open a lot for Tom Brady. The Patriots should steal Russell Shepard in this year’s draft.
