Julian Edelman to follow Chip Kelly?

There is isn’t anything out there saying anything about Julian Edelman departing from the Patriots or heading to a team coached by Chip Kelly, but it would make a lot of sense if that was to happen. Julian Edelman is set to hit the market as a free agent once the season ends along with WR Wes Welker. The past Patriot’s offseason the Patriots signed TE Rob Gronkowski  to a 6 year contract extension worth 53 million running through 2019 and signed TE Aaron Hernandez to a five year contract extension worth 40 million running through 2018. It would be hard press for New England to retain both Edelman and Welker, especially if they wish to add other players to bigger needed areas. The Patriots could keep both and use them as their slot WRs, and they both would make excellent slot WRs for New England. The Patriots do need one more good slot WR and a deep threat on offense to have the most complete offensive team in the NFL. The Patriots could go to the draft for two more WRs if they need too for cheaper money, land a deep threat and a solid slot guy, but if they want a veteran deep threat at wide out then they need the space. I don’t think New England needs to keep both wide outs and Edelman would not be my choice.

Welker wants a lot of money and understandably so but Welker isn’t a Calvin Johnson type WR, he isn’t a deep threat, he is a slot WR, a and should be paid like one. Let’s hope he will understand that so New England can afford to keep him because he is more reliable then Julian Edelman. Jeff Demps was signed by the team but ended his season in the pre season. He was signed by New England to be the special team returner, and that was Edelman’s job before his season came to an injury reason end. Edelman was having a break out season at the wide out position but was riddled with injuries, and couldn’t stay healthy, and that is my number one reason why the Patriots should part ways with Edelman. The Patriots money should be spent for the defensive players and another wide out that can go deep, and of course answer the question should the Patriots keep Lloyd? Lloyd runs a lot of routes, he has been playing like another slot WR and could make an interesting piece to the Patriots offensive puzzle if they bring in a legit threat deep.

Julian Edelman injured his hand in week three versus the Ravens and was inactive for the next three games and was only in on limited duty till week 11 vs the Colts. The next game after the Colts, versus the Jets on Thanksgiving night, Edelman left the game in the third with a concussion, but the game after that against the Dolphins, Edelman broke his foot, and was placed on the season ending injury IR. This season Edelman has seen a lot of playing time and has shown flashes of a good weapon for Brady, but has been injured a lot, and the Patriots shouldn’t give money to an injury prone wide out when the money needs to be used else where, like to Welker.

If the Patriots let Edelman go then Edelman could quickly find work with a Chip Kelly lead team. Chip Kelly is rumored to be in the mix with the Eagles and the Browns, with the Eagles leading the way. Chip Kelly is the Oregon Ducks head coach and runs an unique offense that will be brought into the NFL as Kelly runs the spread option. Edelman use to be a QB in college, and made the transition to wide out in the NFL. and did so successfully, Edelman could be an interest to Kelly because of Edelman speed and athleticism. Edelman could be a wide out who would know how to run in the spread and Kelly loves guys with speed. Edelman would make a great fit and, wouldn’t command a lot of money, and would make a cheap, great weapon for Chip Kelly’s spread option offense.
