After the Ravens lost to the Steelers Sunday safety Ed Reed had some choice words about the NFL. “It’s definitely changing the game,(about the NFL rules)” Reed said. “It’s become an offensive league. They want more points. They want the physical play out of it, kind of. They want [it] like powder puff to where you can just run around and score points ’cause that’s going to attract the fans. I understand you want to make money, but bending the rules and making the game different, you know, it’s only going to make the game worse.”
I absolutely agree with Ed Reed on what he said about the NFL. The rules the NFL has enforced has made this an offensive league, where it is easier to score a lot points and gain a lot of yards through the air, and that is exactly how the NFL wants it too. They want high scoring games, they want it to be a passing league that features a lot of shootouts. The rules the NFL has changed has taken away a lot of what defensive players are allowed to do. The defense is bombarded with holding calls, roughing the passer, defenseless player hits, and the worst a lot more pass interference calls now then ever before and they are spot fouls which makes it even more hideous. Basically every defensive player can’t even look at a wide receiver without something being called on them, it is taking away something from the game and this is where College Football is better then the NFL because they allow defenses to still make plays. It is easier to be a rookie QB now and come in and do well, all the flags and calls have rendered defenses useless unless you have consistent pass rushers. The only defenses that can do good in the NFL now is ones who can consistently get to the QB, if you can’t do that then your defense will give up yards and even points and that has been proven with the Texans defense. One of the best in the league because they can put a lot of pressure on opposing teams QBs but if they don’t get pressure throughout the game you can shred them as much as the next team: look at what the Packers, Jaguars, and even the Lions did to the Texans defense, shredding them with a lot of yards and points scored versus them. The Cardinals have really good secondary players and you would be able to tell that more often if it wasn’t for these new NFL rules.
This past weekend I also noticed one more thing, apparently defenses can’t stop the two minute drives anymore because the Rams, 49ners, Seahawks, and Bears all could not do it. These are some of the better defenses in the league too, and if you go no huddle against them and run a two minute offense you will most likely score, but not only against them but any defense in the league, and even the Lions gave up a last second drive to a rookie QB. I hate this because I would love to see the Patriots defense get back to being great but they will never get back to the defense they was when they won three Superbowl’s because defenses are not allowed to play like that anymore in the NFL.
